Also, on the whole spoiling things with kids that their parents wouldn't buy them, refer to grandparents.
There's a sign on a letterbox near my house which reads "Residence of Mr and Mrs Smith. Grandchildren spoiled while you wait..."

Craig, to be completely fair, and without wishing to put words in his mouth, I'm fairly sure that Kyle was talking about "our" children as in all the children of the world belong to all of us. Allegorical. Metaphorical. My white, hetero, fat arse. (Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.)
Ah yes, thanks Jackie. Hence the quote marks around 'our' Craig.
I can't see the use of children in political advertising as anti-'queer' or anti-same-sex-relationships if that's what you're saying Craig. As you say, not having your own children doesn't put you into some sort of 'not caring about the next generation' box.

And even if she doesn't -- and before we even start on SCOTUS picks -- I don't think it's a whacky "conspiracy theory" that the theo-cons are going to expect their new "rock star" will have some serious influence over a whole tier of Cabinet, sub-Cabinet, judicial and ambassadorial positions that are Presidential appointments. And not all of them require Senate confirmation. (And if, as seems possible if not certain, the Democrats pick up enough seats to win a filibuster-proof majority, then they might actually get their spines out of hock and slap down the worse aspects of a Palin Administration. :) )
Yeah. And she's shuffled right to the front of the line of 'presidential candidates in four or eight years', depending on how this election turns out. Still, she'll have four years to add to her CV I guess.

if they were really interested in rewarding outstanding achievement in all new zealand music then there would be no entry fee or membership ans it would be decided by a panel of knowledgeable judges versed in the many corners of this countries music, or DFenders panel of friends, either's fine really.
It would also have no one to fund it or organise it.
I'd imagine the twelve CDs probably cost more than the $100.

And my belief is that it's utterly cynical using children as campaign fodder.
Meh. Without knowing who the kid in the photo is, the Greens are absolutely a party that is thinking about the future and trying to put in place policies for it. Whether or not you agree with their thinking and their policies, they should absolutely keep saying it - concern about the world that all 'our' children/grandchildren will inherit is fundamental to the party.
It's also a positive advert about the party and what they stand for without attacking the other side (accurately or inaccurately). Nice to see that in politics still.

Propose making the competition a straight knock-out like the FA cup. Our 26 unions makes for a 5 round competition, play each tie home & away and we have a short 10 week season. Top 6 teams from each year get a pass into the second round of the next year.
Every game would matter, all the provinces would have a chance and rugby would be the winner on the day.
The FA Cup can only work like that because the teams all play in another competition at the same time, so if a team gets knocked out they still have a whole nother set of games to play.
What rugby province is going to contract coaches, players (either amateur or professional), a whole infrastructure, stadium etc, couple of months of preseason training, when they might only play two games in a whole season.
It could only work if the teams were all playing in some parallel competition which wasn't a knockout, and we don't have that here.

Incidentally, the harbor bridge already has a pedestrian corridor, its under the bridge, but it forbidden to the public, for safety reasons. It's the service way.
I thought a company was doing walking tours under/on the bridge? Having done the actual walk one summer when I was working for the police, it's nowhere near appropriate for unguided access - to get right across is actually quite tricky - the north end services about 3/4 of the bridge, but from memory there's no good walkway that goes right across.
Yes, yes - I get it now: it's the $40million Harbour Bridge Cycleway or nothing.
I haven't seen such dogmatic belligerence since the Unifems in the 80s.Actually if it was me I'd close one of the lanes, and split it half between pedestrian and cycleway. I'd imagine that'd cost a couple of million at most. But I'd imagine that idea going down like a lead balloon :)
I think the variation between the $40 million and the $5 million needs to be sorted before you could give a definitive answer on the current suggest.

Party X keeps 4 list members until the next election.
That seems fucked up to me. If an electoral petition is to address wrong-doing in the election, and that wrong-doing carried over onto list seats, then it's caused them, so they should go too. If it's shortly after the election, then the list candidates will still be available and the situation could be corrected. Crazy.
But I'm getting damn tired of you patronising anyone who even asks these questions as part of some left-wing character assassination squad.
See, you're only talking down the left-wing character assassination squad, because you haven't seen the really sexy jackets they get to wear. Way cool.
The Daily Show is in fine form at the moment. Their take on the Republicans' response to Gustav is a classic. The interview with Brian Williams is also pretty funny.
Does anyone know why the Daily Show is running behind? Normally we get Thursday's (US time) show on Friday. Last Thursdays was shown on Tuesday our time. It's like they've shuffled it all along one day for some reason. It's annoying as hell and I wish they'd run it one extra day to get it back on a schedule that actually reports as close as possible to the day it happens.

Heh. I liked the bits in the middle of the story:
Sensing Murder producers say psychic Deb Webber had named a person involved in the Kaye Stewart inquiry. Her revelation "could go down in New Zealand policing history".
But Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Levy said police who interviewed Webber and fellow psychic Kelvin Cruickshank had already discounted that person, and other publicly unknown information revealed by the pair had failed to produce any fresh leads.
...
The psychics had described the Conservation Department compound that Mrs Stewart had visited at the entrance to the park, and pointed to a general area where an "encounter" took place.
"She may have met someone there or something may have happened there. There's a lot of speculation and we've got to deal with facts," Mr Levy said.
The TV show's rules normally ensure the psychics have no prior information about a case - but the Stewart family had dealings with both psychics previously. Ninox Television, which produces the show, said the psychics realised they were familiar with the case only when they were halfway through filming.
Particularly the last paragraph. I wonder if that wee fact is revealed in the show?

I did not know, so please do not make statements along the lines of "I can't believe he didn't know".
Completely off topic, but I caught David on the panel yesterday, and a couple of times he talked the same way as John Key. That slight drawl, the way he started off talking.
It put me in mind of some sort of National Party Speaking Classes. :)
