  • Southerly: Primary School for Beginners,

David said: "I always think the best thing about school is that fact that it's in the past" ....

I used to think that too, I'd put it behind me long in the past ... until recently I was faced with the possibility of my son going to the high school I was mercilessly bullied at in forms 3-5 ... in my own little 30-years on PTSD moment I found myself waking at night, and just shaking at the mere thought of walking into that school .... fortunately we found somewhere better but it dredged up something I thought was long in my past

I have to say that I've thought more about my schooling in the past couple of years as my son has been struggling his way through with several things, than in the decade before when it was a distant memory.

We went to an open night for his upcoming intermediate school, and going around the elective classes - metalwork, art, home economics or whatever it is called now - brought back such memories of my intermediate school. Such strong connections run very deep.

A blog is a better forum than a newspaper or TV.

I get the impression that this thread has fallen into the same trap that 'we' would accuse the mainstream media of generalising about blogs. No doubt Clifton could point to WhaleOil's blog as an indication that a blog is a much worse forum than a newspaper. And Russell could point to Investigate or The Truth as a way to show the lesser side of the print media.

There is nothing wrong with the forum of the newspaper, or indeed tv. The fact that it's become more reduced to sound-bites and recycled press releases is as much the fault of the consumer who doesn't demand more from their media in a way that the media responds to, as it is the media itself. There are still nuggets in amongst the chaff however.

I mean a whole bunch of bloggers, and regular readers of blogs, sitting around in a little group agreeing how bad the mainstream media is isn't exactly 'mainstream'.

Most Hard News posts link at least once to a mainstream media story, even if we read news through online blogs and discussion such as this, much of it still originates with the mainstream media.

The media is continuing to move towards the internet and the opportunities that it provides, but it's a long journey that they've only taken the first steps on.

    Grant - you're a dick.

I'd like to say that you're speaking for me there Jackie, but that's no where near strong enough. I'm undecided if he's just being a prick, or is showing all the signs of having no empathy at all. Either of which is quite sad really.

Indeed. Though you're going to be seeing a lot of benefit abatement by the time you cross the repayment threshold anyway.

Actually, if your benefit and supplements is over $300/week, you're going to get over the student loan repayment threshold (just over $18K at present) real quick once you start earning.

There have been some beneficiaries who have had to repay loans straight out of their benefit, though that's not very common.

I think my parents went through the entire 1970s with bedsheets that had a couple holding hands and silly slogans like this.

And which was almost adopted as a Government bill. "Secret agenda"? I don't think so, but you can't have it both ways.

You're ignoring what I said. It's not about what's done with it. If we're talking about pre-election behaviour, it's what is known before the election.

Labour knew nothing about the s 59 repeal bill before the election. If National know something about their policy in these areas and aren't saying anything to the public, that's a completely different story.

As I understand it, something illegal debatably went on -- arguably trespass if he gained access under false pretences.

It's only trespass if he broke in in some way. If he had a ticket or pass, he's an invitee to the event and trespass laws won't apply.

Anything that is not clearly signposted in an election year manifesto is a 'secret agenda'. Well, then I've got to ask where was the manifesto commitment to the repeal of S. 59 of the Crimes Act in 2005, and if there was any such thing why wasn't Sue Bradford's Bill immediately adopted as a government bill?

That's a weak argument Craig. Repeal of S 59 wasn't something that Labour had as public or private policy. It was a piece of legislation that came up through the Private Members Bill ballot. The same goes for SB & FS, which came up as a result of a course case.

The question here is whether National have a public policy which differs from what they plan to do privately.

All governments have to deal with issues that they haven't planned for. It's the question of whether they're planning for it, but being dishonest before the election about that that is the concern.

Jeremy Newsboy was only giving B those few generic compliments to butter him up and make Jeremy seem more fair, wasnt he?

Wells was on the panel yesterday and was asked about Sensing Murder, presumably arising from the Media 7 show. He said that he thought the production, reenactments etc were all very good. It was once the psychics were brought in that he thought it went out the window.
