Last night before the closing ceremony they had highlights of NZ's medal winning efforts.
In the double sculls gold, they had Peter Montgomery talking as he did up until they crossed the line (the "ahead when they actually were still well behind" moment), but they cut the stupidity that he said as they crossed the line ("New Zealand third!") and inserted the bit that he said a minute later when their victory was confirmed ("Black to gold and double gold blah blah").
What's the bet that ten years from now that edited version will be what's presented on highlights of "New Zealand's great olympic moments"?

Though I now wonder on re-reading if they're actually talking about people correcting parents by smacking them?
Touche Sacha. And a better proposal than what the petitioners think they're putting forward.

The amusing thing is that the athlete clearly thought she was an idiot as well. You could see it running through his head... umm, are all reporters from NZ racist?

I've always found if there's a video file that my computer won't handle in any other player (as in, the computer isn't powerful enough), VLC is the one player that will. Simple, small, and it works.

One of them used to be a lecturer of mine.
Is it a gallery of people influential on the internet in some way, or just strange looking?

Should I get run over by a truck, there's a list of people I've never met that my partner has to tell.
I was having this same discussion with an ex-girlfriend who I met via the internet, and who lives overseas. I'm now going to add a page to my will of 'people that should be informed if I die or get seriously ill'.

I need to (I can't say 'pimp' at present, given the discussion on Emma Hart's blog) promote my girlfriend's band, who will be putting out their debut album sometime soon, but which is mostly online anyway:
Meow ('pop electric acoustic country music recorded on a hazy Sunday afternoon type thing')
She would want me to mention that she used to play in a band with 'Martin', pre-Chills days, and not want me to mention that she told him that The Chills is a 'stupid name for a band, that'll never work'.

Am I the only person horribly conflicted and (almost) thoroughly depressed by this topic?
I've now written a post on the topic three times and deleted it because it didn't say what I wanted to say. I get tangled up in the 'yes, but no, wrong here but right here' and end up with four paragraphs that don't end up saying anything useful.
That 'Deep Throat' story was thoroughly depressing. The type of pornography which is of the nature that Anjum quoted on page 2 - not only is it thoroughly unattractive, but concerning about what it says about sex and power in parts of our society for me.

But then you'd be looking at the man in the fastest vehicle. I think the fastest person from human power is some downhill cyclist (though that sounds dubious).
Base-jumping surely, if you're going to let gravity do the work but exclude machines. And on land I think it's cyclist followed by speed skiers, who can hit up to 250km/hour.
And the world record holder in womens shot put wasn't competing at Beijing, at least according to wikipedia. She was in Paris raising her kid.

Lots of interesting discussion.
I don't think any pay to read model is going to work online. I'd be very unlikely to cough up a dollar to read an article even if the first half interested me. I also wouldn't shell out $100 for a subscription to such a thing, or to support it. I'm much more likely to support good causes with my skills than money, as I have more of the former than the latter!
To me an interesting model would be a trust which provided an environment by which freelance journalists could research and produce stories, and then hawk them around the various media outlets for publication. The trust could take a moderate overhead which could cover overheads, administration, and build for expansion. The brand could become known for quality researched journalism - features, media commentary etc, and be something that newspaper editors look to with interest.
If the trust ever got enough money it could look at an internship. Hire a freelance journalist for 6 months on a retainer, enough to keep them going so that the freelance fees would build it up to a reasonable salary.
I'd be very wary about getting into publishing. Publishing carries legal risk, and involves setting up a whole infrastructure to do it. One thing at a time would make much more sense. Journalism and publishing can be relatively distinct activities, and it'd be nice, given the views of a lot of people on here about how publishers have affected the quality of journalism, to keep the two separate.
