A month ago, in yet another bicycle accident

You're like a riding, talking advertisement for not commuting on a bike!

what would you like money spent on? Where do you think a spare billion could be well spent?

I would aggressively throw the whole billion at pre-emptive health care. Literally move the ambulance up the cliff and actively engage families with asthma, diabetes, obesity, smoking etc. Lots more GPs and community nurses, and fund them to set up programmes and come visit families and set up nutrition, lifestyle, health initiatives, and regularly revisit them.

Has Winston gone even more mad?

Seriously, he's eaten too many fruit off the loopy tree this week.

The problem for Naomi is over 800 million people within developing nations have been freed from grinding hand to mouth subsistance poverty by themselves reforming to increase market participation.

    You're channelling rightwingtalkingpoints.com right?

They didn't know what was coming next, but they now knew that there was no limit to the scale of attack if the weapons were available.

    I've rewritten this for you:

IF there were martians, and IF they had superdeathray guns, and IF they didn't like us, man, we'd all be fucked. No limit to the scale of the attack.

  • Hard News: Yr Enemies R Stupid,

There is an uncut two-part Daily Show interview with weaselly Feith which lasts the best part of 20 minutes here.

Was that the interview where Jon Stewart started it (post-interview, edited in) by apologising for the interview that was to follow, and finished the actual interview by saying "well, I don't know if we can use any of this..."?

  • Southerly: A Year Ago Today,

Gosh. When my daughter was born after a long induced labour at about 3AM, 13 years ago at Waikato Hospital, someone got me a pallet and I crashed on the floor in the same room with her and her mother. Very humane, if not exactly comfortable. I am very surprised.

Lucky. Dunedin hospital isn't yet in the 21st century in this regard, and it's not the only one.

  • Island Life: Staring into space,

Lots of things in that story remind me of how I got my glasses. I got them in standard 3, so 9, but like your one I was reading in bad light from an earlier age. In my instance I used to sleep with the door open and a hall light on outside the room. I used to lean over the edge of the bed and read with the book on the floor with the dim light from several metres away. If anyone came into the hallway I'd just put my head back on my pillow in a flash and pretend to be asleep.

I had the same ugly glasses from when I was 9 until about 15. Ghastly grey plastic ones. I'm eternally unhappy with my glasses frames. I gave contacts a serious go and found that my eyes were too sensitive. I could wear them, but couldn't put them in or out.

  • Southerly: A Year Ago Today,

Someone needs to tie this man to a chair and rip a book out of him.

The rules in hospitals that still prevent fathers from staying with their partners and newborns on that first night piss me off immensely. When my last kid was born it was by C-section so the mother was incapable of getting the baby out of bed when she woke. I'd be happy to sign any piece of paper over liability, demand nothing, and make the nurse's night easier by getting the baby and changing nappies etc, and sleep on a mattress on the floor in the corner.

But no. Booted out at 11pm, come back at 8am. Insane.

(Though I realise not all hospitals still operate like it's the 1970s in this way)

They did not such thing, Kyle. They were invited, allocated four questions and were not required to submit them to MFAT, Winston's office or the US State Department for approval beforehand. If Winnie feels "disrespected", perhaps he's nobody to blame but himself.

    I didn't mean physically crash.

I meant, ask questions that had nothing to do with Foreign Affairs at the moment that Winston is gloating at getting to sit next to a significant foreign dignitary, and try and embarass him in the process.

Don't you think it was disrespectful and rude to ask about the Peters issue when Condoleezza Rice was in town? The news article on TV3 was inappropriate. Duncan Garner had no right to ask questions about internal politics when we had a foreign government representative at the press conference.

One suspects that the media decided to crash the Foreign Affairs media conference, because Winston had done a... well Winston, and hadn't actually answered any of their questions when he returned from overseas.

Yes I'm sure they knew it would embarrass him, and her. And probably taking their own sweet revenge of him was part of their plan.

Lawyers could go, 'cept my main man Michael Cullen

Does Cullen have a law degree?
