According to Brian Easton, Muldoon was the lowest ranked member of Holyoake's cabinet in the late 60s.
From Wikipedia:
When Lake died in 1967, Muldoon seemed the natural (and only obvious) choice to replace him; at 45, he became the youngest Minister of Finance since the 1890s. However, because Holyoake saw Muldoon as too arrogant and ambitious for his own good, he ranked him only eighth in Cabinet.
He was still quite influential though. That whole decimal currency thing and all that.

I admit to having some reservations about a former currency trader running the country. In fact any former investment banker. But what makes a good former career for a PM?
To be honest, for some of these people it was so long since they did a 'real job' that it's not as relevant as others.
Shipley finished teaching in 1976, and got into parliament in 1987. I think between she was raising her kids, and involved in some organisations such as plunket, which is probably as influential a job as anything else.
Muldoon entered parliament in 1960, elected to PM in 1975. In between he was a pretty influential Minister. That's around the same time as an MP, as he was as an accountant.
Helen Clark was a lecturer for most of 1973 - 1981, though much of that time she was either studying for her PhD, or overseas on scholarship. Then 18 years as an MP, including a minister in the 4th Labour govt.
Key is relatively new to parliament, so it's more relevant. Also his previous career seems to be pushed more than some of the above, as a positive in his favour.

At the risk of looking like I want to select a drunk, I kind of agree with this. Where art thou Brendan Leonard?
Having his knee cut open I believe.
I don't travel in sports talkback type circles, but I'm surprised I haven't heard anyone asking some questions about how the springbok halfback was able to waltz down the side of the ruck. The only things I've heard were 'piece of brilliance' etc.
The kick over the top to beat the fullback, sure. That was a great play and a good bounce.
But shouldn't any one of eight forwards and a halfback got their hands on him before then? And therefore won the game for the ABs?
Fifty million hours discussing a forward pass and bad refereeing, zero seconds discussing weak defence when it mattered.

Please consider it a national treasure ! It is not subsidised by the state, any more than National Radio is . The broadcasting fee is included in our taxes.
Sounds like the definition of 'subsidised by the state' to me.

That's only of significance for private-sector employment. Police and NZSIS checks return everything, and everything is considered. It also doesn't apply for international travel.
Man, now you tell me. I clean slated my convictions when I travelled to the US two years ago.
And, probably will again next time I go there, despite this information ;)

Speaking of which, I'm going to punch on the side of the head the next person that, asked by me if they feel like a hot drink, replies "I'll have a coffee, but only if you're making one."
See they're actually just complimenting your coffee-making skills. They won't drink anyone else's rubbish.

A conviction would make working for the Police an impossibility
He could work for the police with a conviction, but he'd be very unlikely to become a police officer. A non-sworn staff member - which would be a lot of the IT security people - he could have become, but they'd have to work around the conviction. Not difficult to do if the police really wanted him.
I presume his crime wasn't eligible for the 'clean slate' legislation.

He was pals with Groucho, though, right? So that's at least one Jewish friend.
I wouldn't be the only one to have heard phrases like "I don't like [minority]. Except for [one individual], he/she is OK."
T. S. Eliot was a while ago, I heard a young woman spout this to a group of people last year.

Judge Michael Lance agreed with Mr Haigh that Busch's assaults were a "human and inevitable" reaction to seeing his partner in bed with other people.
The idea that 100% of humans would react with violence when faced with that situation - that's quite sad from a judge. Maybe he should get out more and meet people who don't go from angry to violent in 0.5 seconds.
