Waaay back someone mentioned something about the UOA using actual students for their advertising.

The University of Otago 'Get Over It' campaign features _mostly_ real students. Some of them aren't actually students, but were working at the students association at the time.

The stupid one with the Vice Chancellor was the real VC, thankfully he's gone now, and not just because of the bad advert.

That's why the Cullen Fund and KiwiSaver are pretty important to our economy in the medium term. Two policies that will hopefully survive many changes in Government.

Bets on that National Party policy on the Cullen Fund will be window dressing over a policy which essentially consists of a name change. I suspect they know it's a good policy, but they'll be spewing if the next thirty years, they're constantly going to have to mention Michael Cullen through gritted teeth every time they tip another billion dollars into it.

I vote we all boycott McCallum & Partners for deceiving us. That'll screw 'em.

  • Hard News: The Greening,

The SOMEONE who didn't bring the effigy was indeed your own fair campus. Auckland's responsibility was the aforementioned statue, which was never meant to be burnt, and thus did not really burn very well at all. Took us hours and hours that statue! Twelve years this week and I'm still bitter.

You brought an statue of Jim Bolger to Wellington and expected a busload of Dunedin students not to burn it? We didn't have any Minister come to our campus for 6 years straight, you can't expect us not to get excited as such an excellent look-alike.

  • Hard News: The Greening,

Oh and while we are talking about secondary uses for plastic bags, Kyle I do not recommend using plastic bags to stuff a STATUE that then gets used as an effigy and burnt on the steps of Parliament, because SOMEONE didn't bring the effigy, resulting in a whole heap of people inhaling toxic gases and having to get some medical attention.

It was plastic bags? I thought it was stuffed with newspaper. Whatever it was, it smouldered more than it burnt, but the fire extinguisher probably didn't help much.

And I had nothing to do with the effigy, I just happened to get photographed by the NZ Herald shoving my student loan paperwork into the (not really burning) fire. I thought Auckland brought it along.

It's on my clipcard of 'media things to get done as a student politician'. Morning Report, check. TV1 and TV3 news, check. International newspaper, photo in NZ daily outside your home town, check. If I'd ever been interviewed by Paul Holmes I would have had the complete set (umm, "bingo?").

I've got hold of a plastic ballpoint pen that is apparently, biodegradable & made of corn. (Yeah, if they ain't growing biofuel, they're growing plastic pens).

Good to see technology making the phrase "they don't grow on trees you know!" redundant.

Oddly enough, the last Fairfax poll, iirc, has Labour ahead in Christchurch and Dunedin -- it's Auckland where they're really dying.

I don't know if you should take that much out of Labour being ahead in Dunedin. I think Dunedin North & South are pretty much the definition of 'safe seat' in NZ politics.

Relative to how far ahead they were in the last election would be a more interesting poll.

Lots of good ideas there Dyan.

I agree with you that sports tend to target those that are already doing exercise. I know a bunch of kids that are playing two or three winter sports, they get an hour exercise up to ten times a week. Other kids, hardly any at all.

There are sports-related activities which can explore that list of things more than others. Soccer for example, is not a high user of the upperbody, and has very little hand-eye coordination, though I'm sure it's good in other areas. Ice hockey is tremendous for balance (as is figure skating, and roller-blading etc), and hand eye coordination. Of course, it's much easier for a family, or a school to kick around a few soccer balls than get themselves to an ice rink and all geared up.

Surely Veitch doesn't count as a sportsman?

    From the blog:

Every week the Dropkicks do a segment called "Dick of the Week" where we select an athlete or someone involved in sports who has done something really stupid or harmful to themselves or others and "boo" them.

    He's someone involved in sports.

Particularly if hitting your girlfriend and then giving her money not to say anything about it is a sport. Sounds like he needs more than a week to me.

Ah, but the reason we largely have two kinds of hydrocarbon-burning cars (diesel and petrol) is because those two fuels have been very convenient for several decades, and thus carmakers have an incentive to produce vehicles to a shared standard.

Also the fuel you put in your car only commits you to that car until the fuel runs out - a couple of weeks or whatever. The music you buy could commit you to that one player forever. Which given how fast technology is moving in this area is pretty unrealistic.

And the fuel that I put in my car isn't yet worth more than the car, not the case once I've purchased a dozen or so albums online in relation to my player.
