I think that's why so many people have a begrudging regard for the renegades e.g. Winston.
No, he's a git. Renegade or not.

If you even try to look at whom someone is voting for in a polling place you can go to prison for two years. That's four times longer than the maximum penalty for a candidate who destroys ballot papers (a pet peeve of mine with our electoral law).
There's a couple of penalties that we got around the wrong way, surely. If I close my eyes, grab your ballot paper, and set it on fire, then I'm down for 6 months, but if I open my eyes and leave it alone, it's 2 years?
I too like our voting tradition. Election day feels like one of those days with so much anticipation, where nothing really much happens. I have no idea why some countries vote on a week day, that seems stupid to me, for many reasons.
I've never been overseas for an election, so the only question I'd have about internet voting would be for people in more obscure areas of the world. Voting might be physically possible in London, but what about parts of South America, Africa, Asia etc? If you're not near an embassy, how easy is it to vote? Maybe it could be limited to people overseas?

George: I'm sure our resident Legal Beagle could come up with all kinds of perfectly sound objections, but how complicated would it really be to fix the election date at (say) the first Saturday in November every three years, unless the Government lost confidence and supply in which case the election would have to be held (say) six weeks after that date?
I'd support that too Craig. I fail to see why the election date should be left up to whatever the PM last drank.

First, Crosby Textor aren't that evil any more. They failed to save John Howard. They failed to get Michael Howard across the line. And their "small target" strategy for Boris Johnson overlooked the fact that his status as the "anti-Livingstone" was what appealed to his core supporters.
That might make them incompetent. It doesn't make them not evil... or otherwise.

By the way, I think Southland is the nicest part of NZ by a very long way. I'd be interested if anyone can anyone nominate anywhere (in NZ) nicer?
I've never spent more than a few days there, but Central Otago has to be one of the most visually stunning, but also fun places to be. Hot in summer, snow in winter.
Some place like Naseby if you were looking for quiet over the winter.

I think you'll find that Aro Valley in Wellington is home to both the Hippys (ies?) AND the socialists.
Which would relate if 'lived in Aro Valley' and 'members of the Green Party' were the same set.

I cannot believe that Hagar's motivation for writing that article in the SST was simply to inform and enlighten the readers - his past form suggests the main purpose was to score political points on behalf of his fellow socialists at the Greens.
I suspect you've never been to a Green Party gathering. More hippy than socialist.

Where the fuck did I say anything as stupid as ""your example of National being shits isn't correct because Labour are shits too"?
Hmm. Craig, you responded to Russell talking about Key by saying:
OTOH, Russell, it's not hard to feel that folks are getting pretty damn sick of the slick, punchy and totally content free soundbite that Clark is very, very good at as well.
Which feels to me to be close enough to what David said.
Can I ask you a serious question, and if you don't feel comfortable answering it publicly, fair enough.
How do you, as a member of the National Party, feel about Key using Crosby Textor? Not just in relation to today, but the past couple of years, and the coming four months?

And so we go on...yet another beat up by Nicky Hagar.
I don't think so. National have previously tried to keep quiet the involvement of this PR firm in their campaign, and the PR firm has a reputation for some rather low tactics. Advising Howard to lie during the Tampa incident, push-polling, tabloid smears over in London. If there's only relative levels of scum in politics PR, then these guys appear to be at the bottom end of it.
National using them again is news, absolutely.
I also find the fact that Nicky is clearly still getting information handed to him from the inside of the National Party rather amusing. I have sieves at home that leak less than this. National Party higher-ups must have had a collective tantrum on Sunday at their inability to stop it.

I was thinking about this last night while listening to the game, and I wonder how much of that annoyance stemmed from the rain-affected one-dayer, when England's habitual slow over rate took another victory away from NZ.
Yeah. If Gillespie hadn't gotten those last two runs, NZ could have claimed to have been robbed of two victories by the English cricket captain.
