Or if that's a bit cold gravel for you, try mercy, compassion and redemption in the face of grinding hardship and theft in the stories of Les Miserables and The Grapes of Wrath.

Or he could try wandering down the street and wondering who sleeps under that bridge, why is that guy poking around in the rubbish bin looking for food. Sadly books aren't the only evidence our of need for Emma's empathy.

I take it you see no connection between justice and law...

Justice and justified are not the same word. Neither are justice and law. Unjustified and unlawful are certainly not the same thing.

Murder is defined as unjustified killing. Go read a dictionary or something if you don't have anything useful to contribute.

I don't think you should tell people to go look at a dictionary unless you've done it yourself, because you look silly when they do and you're wrong.

Murder isn't defined as unjustified killing. Talking about circular definitions, murder is defined as an 'unlawful killing'. In three dictionaries that I checked. You can murder someone and it be seen as justified.

Kyle, are you prepared to blame your bank robbery on a tooth fairy in court? :)

Well I've never robbed a bank, but I'll try that defence. You said:

Nor does it even mean we are justified in lying.

Just pointing out what a silly statement that was, clearly we all lie all the time, and it's entirely justified and often a good thing.

I actively encourage parents to lie to their kids about Santa Claus. I do it myself. And the tooth fairy. Easter Bunny. These are my sins.

Here's a post from the NZ Sikh Society's Verpal Singh on AEN

That's a mature and measured reaction. Not letting any police failures off the hook, but staying focused on the criminal.

I was actually in a bit of a hurry today.

Yeah I'm definitely not shooting the messenger. You can only work with what you've been given.

Yes, It's amazing how Winston has pulled this off.

I don't get how there's no legal redress. He's just making up stupid shit and getting away with it and looking cute. Shouldn't the law at minimum say that he should have to give the damn money back, like Labour did?

In the wops, where it might be two hours to the nearest town of any importance and the AOS comes from somewhere that's further away still, the balance will be a little different but still heavily tilted.

Whether it's allowed under police policy or not, I'm sure a fair few rural police officers would have a shotgun or other weapon in their vehicle - either a police one or a personal one. As much use for dealing with livestock, animals etc, as any risk from an armed offender.

Yes, I saw a few seconds of CCTV on TV too, but what does that really tell us? That the killer was a psycho and therefore the Police were right to wait until they were certain he'd left?

My point was in response to what you said:

And you have this information because the Police gave it to you (via the media). We all got this story, but we don't get to see the footage ourselves, so we take the word of the media/Police.

Clearly we did get to see some of the footage ourselves, and the media have apparently had full access to it.

I think it backs up my original point that the shooter was clearly either a psycho nut (a la David Gray) or a person who lost control under stress. Neither of which are good situations to go into wearing a vest that doesn't stop bullets and carrying a short stick (the police), or wearing a cotton shirt and carrying a stretcher (the ambulance officers).

I'm done with the EFA for this election cycle, and it hasn't even started yet. I know you're trying hard to make it understandable for humans Graeme, but my eyes started to glaze over there.

Previously I've somewhat argued for it. Now I think I need do get a couple of law degrees to understand it in practice.

Surely it can't be this difficult to write laws to make elections fair?

Isn't it a bit of a cynical position to take on the part of the police?

The concept that people mustn't take the law into their own hands, and protecting people from crime is the role of the police is all well and good, but if in reality that protection has quite a few riders attached to it, and in there is no guarantee of any protection, is that really acceptable?

I don't think those two things are that closely related.

Police wouldn't advocate shop keepers 'taking matters into their own hands' by having a gun on the premises, or pepper spray, or a baseball bat.

The best response to an armed robbery is to give them everything they ask for, as that's the most likely way to get them out of your shop and pointing a gun at you. The most important result is getting out alive. Sadly that didn't happen in this case, but that should still be the advice. Planning some other sort of response isn't good, as it's going to be more likely that there will be a shooting or a stabbing, and it's as likely to be the shopkeeper or a bystander as the robber.

The fact that maybe people now have more awareness that police will consider their own and ambulance officers safety before moving in shouldn't change that. The goal is not to get shot, if they arm themselves in some way, the opposite will occur.
