  • Island Life: BP-Fuelled Rage,

SHow me the stats! Maybe it's just my perception that every 2nd road death seems to have involved a car/truck collision.

I don't even need to link to stats I think for that Andrew. I think everyone knows that the prime causers of accidents on the road are alcohol and young drivers in cars.

There might be a perception problem around trucks/buses etc, but that's because when you get hit by a truck your car is going to end up a big mess. That doesn't mean they're more likely to be involved in accidents, or even that they cause them, just that it makes the news.

Those are actually heavy enough to have a maximum speed of 90km/h on the open road here. I wonder how many of the people who own them here are aware of this. I wonder how many of the cops know this and enforce it!

It's my understanding that 90km/hour arises from towing a trailer, and applies to my car when I tow as much as a truck with a trailer. Doesn't have anything to do with weight at all?

  • Island Life: BP-Fuelled Rage,

Doesn't change the fact that aggressive driving in articulated trucks is inherently much more dangerous to my health than aggressive driving in SUVs.

Professional drivers such as bus drivers, truck drivers, taxi drivers, courier drivers, police officers etc tend to have better safety records on the road. Some receive additional training over and above the ordinary person, but they all spend a lot of time driving and as a result tend to be better at it.

  • Island Life: BP-Fuelled Rage,

And for anyone that scorns SUVs that never leave the paved road... I assure you I've had to drive up on the curb on more than one occasion.

You need an SUV to drive up on the curb? Man, my 2WD Toyota sedan must be a real workhorse, and don't tell my girlfriend's wee hatchback. It'll get delusions of grandeur.

  • Hard News: Medical Matters,

Also, Kyle, girls don't usually like it when you compare them to inanimate bodies of water. Just a heads up ;)

What? First they don't like being seen as incubators, then they're anti being brood mares, and now we're down on the whole bodies of water thing?

Does that mean I'll have to take this whole 'women as people too' thing seriously? Man.

  • Island Life: BP-Fuelled Rage,

The debate continues on Global Warming/Global Dimming - possibly the sooner fossil fuels are used up and an alternative (cycling?) is found the better for everyone.

    Umm, yup. There's an argument.

It is OK to have an SUV if you are using it for its stated purpose 100% of the time.

I think the point is, it'd be good if people used it for its stated purpose more than 0% of the time.

If you own a Humvee for example, you should be going to war just occasionally, or at least training for such.

  • Island Life: BP-Fuelled Rage,

Yes, whether you want to run over your own toddlers, roll your vehicle at speed, crush pedestrians, or simply treat other cars as your crumple zone, there's an SUV for you!

You should work in advertising! Hehe.

  • Hard News: Medical Matters,

My favourite aspect of this whole argument - and, in fact, these arguments in general - is the way the woman hosting the all-important foetus is apparently a total afterthought.

If the baby is a tadpole/frog, then I'm sorry to break this to you, but you're a fishbowl/pond/creek. Feel free to choose what suits ;)

  • Island Life: BP-Fuelled Rage,

According to the answers, if I do all those things I can save a total of 84%! Apparently I'll be back driving on the smell of an oily rag, to quote my Dad.

I would like the inquiry to throw some light on why, according to media reports today, petrol has gone up 35 percent in the last year whereas diesel has gone up 80 percent. Given that more people are buying diesel passenger cars, is this just another trick by the oil conglomerates to future proof themselves and their mega profits?

I presume this comes from the fact that a decent proportion of the cost of petrol is tax, which hasn't changed. So the increase in the price in the cost of the actual petrol component, might be about 60%.

The cost of diesel is entirely the cost of diesel, the tax is applied later through road user charges.

  • Hard News: Medical Matters,

It is a modern day belief that a baby at conception is alive. It is a modern day belief that a baby at conception is human.

This really feels like an argument about whether a tadpole is a frog, in 'modern day belief', whatever that means.

    Um Kyle, I wrote that...

I know. You wrote that in response to me, I was just saying that it was a sensible explanation.

Sorry if the sensible discussion and seeking out of intelligent thoughts was getting in the way of the other 20 pages of posts ;)
