The traditional BA fur lined hood worn with an undergraduate gown for graduation from the University of Cambridge.

    Hehe, nice one Shep.

Now we need a bunch of graduands at Vic's next graduation to find Ron Mark and start rapping at him and tag his office.

  • Hard News: Yes we canny,

All I'm jaded about is talking about it.

Maybe that's because you've made six posts on the topic?

Isn't the obvious solution to stop talking about it? ;)

  • Island Life: Ice-cold rabble rousing,

    Wikipedia says:

Perversion of the course of justice takes the form of one of three acts:

    * Fabrication or disposal of evidence
    * Intimidating a witness or juror
    * Threatening a witness or juror

  • Island Life: Ice-cold rabble rousing,

Can anyone say why members of the family have not been prosecuted for perverting the course of justice

I believe perverting the course of justice involves actively doing something - destroying evidence, hiding the murder weapon etc. I don't know if "refusing to answer any questions" or saying "I don't know" comes under its brief.

  • Island Life: The Budget of All Mothers,

We've had an unstable government in NZ ever since MMP, despite the 5% threshold, it's simply not represented that way by the media. Labour's been a minority government for nine years now.

We haven't had an unstable government. In between elections, we've had one change in the makeup of government when NZ First broke up in 1998 and Shipley held it together with the new Mauri-Pacific Party and Alamein Kopu (ex Manu Motuhake/Alliance). The only unstable government we've had was the result of the fracturing of two minor parties.

Labour has held together three terms of government, with no problems maintaining supply and demand, no re-working of agreements between elections etc.

  • Hard News: Bean-Counting the Beat,

Why not a lobbyiest, someone representing the the interests of NZ Music to govt (as they do to an extent with plans for new schemes etc), pushing full on for quotas, extended national radio, etc etc.

It would be an inappropriate use of taxpayer money for a government department or other entity to lobby government to change policy. Departments implement policy, and advise, lobbying is totally outside their brief.

And Nicky Hager would have to write a book on it, a la Timberlands, and I don't think he really wants to get that into depth on NZ music politics.

  • OnPoint: Sneaky brackets,

__Re the payroll tax, I agree it should be considered when calculating total tax take, but it's paid by employers, not employees,__

    So is PAYE.

I'm no expert on taxes, but isn't PAYE paid by employees, but collected by law by employers?

I know that when I look at my payslip, it says gross income, which is what my work pays me, and then shows all the things it takes out of it, including PAYE.

If my employer pays PAYE, then they're also paying for my child support and student loan repayments. Which is nice of them, but they'll be pissed when they find out.

  • OnPoint: Sneaky brackets,

and ain't it a hassle. i've a bunch of money in an aussie super fund i can't touch until i retire...

A relative of mine retired from his job in NZ, and went to work in Australia for five years.

He got a substantial super payout from his retirement, but was unable to draw it down. If he did, as soon as he arrived in Australia they would tax it at whatever percent (I think it was 30something %).

He left the super in NZ, went without five years of interest on the principal, and collected it when he got back.

Made no sense to me, as he'd already paid tax on it here in NZ. Wonder if it works the same the other way.

__"Heh, that's funny.People said similar things in 1968, and then it actually looked vaguely possible, unlike today.Sadly, despite what you can read on the Socialist Worker (and other) posters, the revolution isn't coming to NZ."__

    Yeh poverty, it's hilarious.

You should take the 'funny' line as being on a different topic, given that it was in a different paragraph. FYI I found 'organising one day in ways that may make you feel uncomfortable' amusing given my background as a non-violence organiser, based on theories about making power feel uncomfortable.

I see no timebomb. Timebomb implies that it'll go off at some stage, which would be interesting.

  • Hard News: Yes we canny,

The “timebombs” of a growing disenfranchised sector of the first world population are real (let alone the brothers and sisters outside our international trading clubs) and while we may be able to hide them in the “invisible’ suburbs for twenty years they just might start organising one day in ways that may make you feel uncomfortable.

    Heh, that's funny.

People said similar things in 1968, and then it actually looked vaguely possible, unlike today.

Sadly, despite what you can read on the Socialist Worker (and other) posters, the revolution isn't coming to NZ.
