@Kyle: The quarterback isn't doing a drawing to "remind" the other players what they're doing. They may be using a different set up every single time.

Ah yup. Do I need irony tags now?

Also yes they could play both sides of the ball (and they used to when it first started) but then it would more like league, and if you want to watch league do that instead.

Well it would still be football, just with less people on the sideline. Not everyone would have to play both ways.

But I think all the various blockers on the offense, most of them could probably be rushers on the defense. There just doesn't seem to be any point to having completely different offense/defense, they just do it because they can afford to and the rules allow it.

In my limited experience of the game, it wouldn't lose very much if you had 15 - 20 starters to cover all the specialist positions, and then a reserve bench, but once you replace a player they can't come back in (like rugby).

  • Hard News: The Trophy Hunter,

But demo-crazy's a bitch, whether in Juneau or Dunedin. And however much I shake my heads at the result, I'm pretty relaxed with the idea that you don't have to pass an IQ test to vote.

No Craig, no offense taken. Keep on truckin'.

No, but if Stevens had another three thousand odd votes he would have been the legitimately elected Senator from Alaska. Wouldn't make him any less of a corrupt douche, but still legitimately elected.

I think the false equivalence is:

    1. Stevens convicted of corruption.
    2. Thomson not convicted, or even suspected of corruption. Indeed, involved in bringing corrupt person to prosecution.

  • Hard News: The Trophy Hunter,

Meanwhile, here at Tolley watch we see our stellar education minister demonstrating her grasp of her portfolio by dismissing not one but two school boards within her first 100 days.

I know no more than than what I read on stuff, but the latest school got a shocking ERO report, which said that staff were abusing children, using language, and physically.

Which you would have hoped the board would put a stop to, and if they didn't, they'd be out on their ear and the minister would appoint someone who'd clean that shit up.

Unless there's more to the story, I fail to see what the problem is with Tolley.

damn - I paid mine off this year - I could be getting a lower rate!

If it makes you feel better Paul, I'll let you help pay mine - out of the goodness of my heart of course.

As a whole bunch of people will doubtless be saying at the moment: if I knew then what I know now...

I fixed three years two months ago, but the rate was from three years six months ago (long settlement). For five years.

I figure even if it stays low and I spent the next 22 months paying significantly more than I would have on floating, I'm probably about even with the 38 months before that. And I wanted the security and certainty of knowing how much I'd be paying each fortnight.

    So: evenses really.

I remember that talking about "tramping" in Australia was met with giggles. I think they thought it meant "whoring". They use "Bushwalking" or "Hiking".

Same in America. Tramping apparently refers to street prostitution there.

Ooo now hold on there. You're comparing sprints to marathons.

    Well true.

I'm just saying I think it'd be a better sport if there was a 10 second break between plays, and the quarterback didn't have to do a drawing to remind half the team what they're supposed to be doing. It would turn a 3+ hours viewing spectacle into a 2 hours tops game, and have the same amount of action.

As Danielle said, that's why a lot of people don't like watching American Football, it feels like it could be done faster with no big loss in terms of the actual game.

You've got Wide Receivers who constantly and consistently sprint 10 - 40 [or more] yards on a play, run back to the huddle then line up and do it again.

Yes, but they also get to spend a couple of minutes on the sideline while the defence takes the field. I'd be more sympathetic to the players if they played both ways. It'd make it a much cheaper sport too.

You mean like at the end of each over in cricket?

Comparing cricket to american football is like comparing kickboxing to bowls. You don't watch cricket for the constant action, high intensity etc.

Rugby, rugby league, american football etc, are very physical, high energy games in which players throw themselves into each other with great physical energy.

Part of rugby and rugby league is the very high level of fitness you require to sustain that for 80 minutes, which only occasional breaks. American football doesn't seem to have that - there's a break after every play. Not a 3 second break, like rugby league, but a big break. It removes a whole element of the game. It also encourages players that are built about the size of a bus to play. The fitness requirements aren't as high due to the breaks.

Also, a game takes 3 hours or so, and the action is only 60 minutes. You're getting one third value for your time watched.

  • OnPoint: Joggers in Saigon,

If the death penalty can deter these economic crimes, and these economic crimes affect millions of people, isn't it worth it?

Is there any evidence that a death penalty is more effective at deterring economic crimes than it is at deterring violent crimes (ie, not much at all?).

Possibly people might think more about the consequences, as it's not so 'heat of the moment', but it still assumes that people are planning to get caught, rather than get away with it.

oh but related, hopefully all those bowls won't matter soon when Superman fixes it all.

    From that story:

Lawmakers are considering legislation that would say if the NCAA declares any game a "championship" game without a playoff system, that would constitute fraud under the Federal Trade Commission Act.

I kept looking for the punch line to indicate that the story was a joke.

Apparently between two overseas wars, a massive financial crisis, and fixing a gazillion things that Bush fucked up, this is what is concerning Federal lawmakers.

And then you spend four plus hours getting peeved because they could be doing these basic things so very, very much faster.

Hear hear. I get the basic concepts of the game, I just think the way it's played is designed around the need to insert frequent ad breaks, rather than play a game of sport.
