Now Kyle, I don't really want to drag you over coals for this, because I'm certain it happens everyday, but I did find it very interesting in light of your parents' respective professions. What witnessed crimes would you ordinarily not hesitate reporting to the police?

    1. Well, as I said a couple of times, I didn't witness anything apart from a crying child. I was told by another person what happened.

    2. I'm not sure what my parents' professions have to do with it. People whose parents do different jobs should feel less obligation to report crimes? Children of plumbers only have to report crimes which carry a jail sentence of more than three years?

Kyle, if one of my children smacked one of their children when they deserved it in public I doubt if you would say anything. If you did you think twice before you meddled again. They would unlikely do anythink physical but they would let you know verbally to mind your own bloody business.

I'm not sure if people getting physically or verbally aggressive is a good reason not to say something when you witness a child being hit. If anything, it sounds likely that it's a good reason to say something. If that's their attitude to other adults, it doesn't sound too good for the kids.

All the same, if you could get your children to wear t-shirts that read "I believe it's OK to smack my children", that will make it easier to spot them and prepare my wee speech in advance.

I wouldn't imagine it would be useful in many instances to have the conversation continue beyond those two lines. Simply to bring attention to what they've done and let them know that people don't approve, and are willing to say something.

Living up to the rhetoric from his inauguration speech, in practical ways. The world got a little bit better three days ago, and now we're seeing it. Feels good!

    "It's knowledge, bro."

I'm going to use that line from now on to instantly win all internet arguments.

That's certainly a discussion I'd be interested in.

In relation to this incident we were in a crowd going down stairways and it happened behind us, so we would have had to fight through people to get back to it. And I didn't see it, but my girlfriend did, so I'm sure it happened, but it really developed into a conversation between the two of us "he hit her?", "yes, he slapped her on the face", "he slapped her on the face?", "yes, what should we do?", not between us and him.

I've come to the conclusion (since) that it's probably something you need to decide beforehand. In the heat of the moment, with lots of other people around, when you're unsure of yourself, it's too easy to not do anything, which I think isn't what I want of myself.

If I had a rule for myself, that I would always say something if a saw an adult smacking a child, then I would be more likely to do it when it happened. If my line was "Excuse me, did you just smack that child?" with a followup of "You know you can't do that?" then I would be intervening but not too much of the "telling other people what they can and can't do".

My pick is that Obama will follow the traditional Democrat playbook of focusing most of his attention on domestic efforts. International relations will just be guided by existing policy.

That's not the traditional Democrat playbook at all.

Wilson, Roosevelt, Kennedy, Johnson were all very focused on international issues. Johnson to the detriment of his domestic policy.

As was Clinton, who got in boots and all to the Middle East peace issue, as well as Kosovo, and who was involved in Ireland as well.

I don't really want to get into a game of my dick-tionary is bigger than yours, but "professional" also carries connotations of competence and ability to achieve a goal.

Yes. And my post pointed out, that wasn't the meaning I was using in my original post.

A professional unit? I think much of the rest of the world has very good reason to despise what the empire-building, in-fighting retards at State have wrought over the years.

    From the dictionary:

Professional: following an occupation as a means of livelihood or for gain: a professional builder.

Scott Horton at Harpers, possibly overdoing it a wee bit, says "The reaction of State Department employees as Hillary Clinton arrived this morning apparently bears comparison to the liberation of Paris at the end of World War II."

Probably more an indication of much a lot of those people have disliked where they've been taken as a professional unit over the past eight years.
