Yes. Though uniformed police officers in Australia regularly carry guns, so it wouldn't be unusual for people there like it would here.

Personally I get the heebie greebies when I'm in an airport and the cops walk past with their guns on their hips. Probably wouldn't affect me as much if every cop in the country was toting.

Kyle, stop trying to lead me into 'history of the doughnut' pedantry, it's not fair.

    I think we need clicky-links.

What does one sell the bit you removed from the hole as? If you added cocoa and coconut you could market them as truffles/rum balls.

I get weirdly cranky about pseudo-bagels -- which are not made by punching holes in the middle of burger buns, folks.

    Now that's classy.

When you think about it, you could pretty much do doughnuts in the same way. Even easier, non-ringed doughnuts. Just add icing!

I'm with you on fillet (bet you that was McDonald's doing), but I want to be there next time you say the word "sachet".

Well indeed. We take words from other languages wholesale, and some we pronounce 'properly' (or close to it), others we completely massacre.

For people to be snobby about the former on the basis that "it's French!", and then to use the latter without blinking...

They're now English words, and like much of the English language, they're ripped off from other languages. Also like much of the English language, they're now said in an 'English' way, which may, or may not be consistent with their origins. Deal.

PS: I would hardly ever say 'sachet', I'm a 'packet' kinda guy really. Simple folk and all that.

And once I got corrected asking for a panino. "It's actually panini, sir."

Conversely, I get annoyed if I pronounce 'fillet', and say the T, and people correct me. My ex used to do it, and she was American. I was always tempted write down "St. Louis" and ask her to pronounce it, and then tell her it should be pronounced "Sain' Lou-ee", because it's named after the King of France.

    That's just begging for satire.

Bet you can't do as well as the actual list though.

  • Hard News: Off the back of the deck,

I was catching up on the Daily Show last night and the show on the 5th had Jon Stewart saying to one of the news people (in nappies) that the reason Israel had moved now was because they thought the next US administration wouldn't be as sympathetic.

That is, there isn't anything that happened a couple of weeks ago in particular that led them to respond any more than a month or three months ago. Jon Stewart called it their "hope and change deadline".

I've been away on holiday so completely away from the news, but if that's accurate, that's truly terrible.

Stephen Walker, I can see this is something you're obviously passionate about, which is fine, indeed, important - what's going on over there is terrible. But if we could have less of the swearing at people who don't agree, that would be nice.

It has been a bit tragic with bush and his staff trying to build a legacy over the past six months. Well and truly in the running for worst president ever, and certainly worst president post WW2.

They released a list of "one hundred things that you might not have known about the Bush administration". Truly grasping at straws.

That people who should know better actually think the choice of First Puppy or the presidential choice of PDA has any news value whatsoever.

The Daily Show last week brought in Anderson Cooper and did a clip on 'The Race to the Doghouse', a debate involving dogs.

And then a great couple of clips on the media's obsession with where the Obama girls are going to school and what they're having for lunch. Ordinary Pupils and Sidwell Friends Quad.

The last one in particular is good - Daily Show Reporters go undercover at the school.

Daily Show, nailing it because the actual media suck :)
