  • Hard News: Conversation Starters,

Yeah, there's a liquor store sharing the forecourt with a BP here in Dunedin which some people comment on.

But at least they are actually different stores, and you have to leave one to go into the other. And employees in both have to know a little bit about the trade and safety to do so, which is probably not the case in all places in the world.

West Indies seem to be playing Vettori out (he's 10-0 off six overs) and might be trying to win the game off the other 40 overs. Which is brave.

However we don't really want Gayle to be in 10 overs from now (he's got 79 of 124 runs so far). That would be bad.

  • Up Front: The Home Straight,

Ooh cheese. Evansdale cheese factory, near the turnoff to shag point (south of it I think, over the Kilmogs) is pretty good. On the right as you go south.

And the Speights Tour in Dunedin is reasonably good, particularly if you like tasting beer afterwards.

Conscription really is a pre-modern war concept. In America it largely comes up for political point-scoring rather than any chronic shortage of volunteers.

  • Up Front: The Home Straight,

The best stop between Waimate and Dunedin is Moeraki, about 15 minutes south of Oamaru, with zee boulders. Don't go to the restaurant, head slightly further south and take the next left and walk north along the beach to avoid having to pay to use their access.

In Dunedin, if you've got the money, this is good fun (possibly moreso for kids), and you see seals and yellow-eyes. I'm not sure if the Albatross Colony is good this time of year, I forget when the adult birds are around, the tour through the gun emplacements is pretty good if you're into that. Larnach castle is alright on the drive out, as are Glenfalloch gardens.

In town, the Otago Museum has a wonderful butterfly thing going on at the moment. The Taieri Gorge railway is alright, though nothing like the transalpine. Olveston House is near the centre of town and is probably better than Larnach Castle if you're into 19C culture, art, houses etc.

If you can find the time, take the coastal road to Invercargill via the Catlins, rather than through Gore. The main road is very boring, the Catlins road is lovely, but probably takes another hour, plus stops for waterfalls, caves, gypsy caravan, etc.

I think Makikihi has a chip making factory, and that's it. One suspects if the factory closed down, so would the shop, pub, and all half-dozen houses.

    Have fun!

Kyle, remove one particular person and the problem is solved.

Well if that's the case, if you (and others) stopped responding to him, the problem might fix itself.

Personally I'm starting to find it all a bit unlike what we've come to expect from System all round.

This must be the 5th or 6th system discussion that a bunch of people have killed in this way.

I vote for any topic which mentions 'copyright', or even 'music', Russell has a list of people who are banned from posting. I'd rather have some less informed people posting from outside the square, than what we've been getting on these topics to date, from some people on the inside of the debate.

Yeas, but there is little doubt that the level confrontation across the USA (and Australia) was dramatically heightened by the thought that either your or your brother or boyfriend might shortly be forced into uniform and shipped across the Pacific for a year or two into harms way and do do harm to others for no good reason.

This was a factor in college protest in the late sixties and early seventies, but not a big one. College students were eligible for college deferments. In the early stages they had to take a test, which most passed, by the late sixties all undergraduates were eligible automatically. The students at Kent State were personally only at risk when they graduated. Despite what was often claimed about the draft system leading to a lower class army, protecting middle class kids, Vietnam was a well-educated army as a percentage of the population - lots of college students volunteered, and the ROTC led a lot to Vietnam.

Students got much more radical when there were either changes to the deferment, or it was threatened to be removed. That brought lots of non-traditional protesters out onto the streets. Kent State was part of a wave of protests that happened that week after Nixon announced the invasion of Cambodia. I visited the campus in 1995 - the bell shown in the youtube video is still there, but now mounted on a simple pedestal, and wandering around campus there's almost nothing to mark what happened there that day for the casual visitor.

After Kent State (early May) there were massive protests about the shootings, and most campuses closed early for the year, and didn't open again until the Fall semester. The Presidents were (rightly) terrified that their campuses would become unmanageable with student protest.

The primary motivation, particularly by 1970 when Students for a Democratic society had fallen over into the Weather Underground, and the Democrats had failed them in 1968 at Chicago, was a moral one - they really hated what their country was doing to Vietnam, and Cambodia and the people in it.

Definitely. His job may not have been as glamourous as Guptill's, but he executed perfectly. Years from now, we may look back on Saturday as the day the nightmare ended.

You don't want to put a bigger jinx on it do you?

Did you do something similar when Sinclair scored a double ton on debut? Bond in the VB series?

Man, get with the programme people!

There's no sensible model by which ISPs can be made responsible for catching illegal downloading. There might be a way they could do it now, but there wouldn't be a week later when some geek writes new software.

You'd just need to stick strong encryption into the packets, add a little overhead, and then include the key with the torrent file. The independence would make it practically impossible to crack.

You'd actually be encouraging the creation of software and systems that would make it harder to find the really bad downloading - child pornography etc.

The site that I torrent files from is independent from the site that torrents the files - it just provides links. So even if the torrent site is killed, the forum will still be there and just switch to another torrent site. Both are members only sites, though I suspect that's fairly unusual.
