Probably because there is no conscription today?

Kent State wasn't about conscription, it was a protest in reaction to the USA's invasion of Cambodia.

It's more or less a three hour drive, and not a particularly exciting one, although the fact that we were well behind schedule, towing a U-Haul trailer, and driving through a thunderstorm certainly meant it had its moments on that occasion.

Ohio has the coolest storms. I was driving north into Dayton in (US) summer 1995, and I had to pull the car over the rain was so heavy, I couldn't see 10 metres on front of me. Lightning was striking the road a couple of miles ahead of us, and the thunder made the car shake. Probably scary if you didn't like storms, but I love them.

  • Field Theory: My first cricket match,

I've been despairing recently about no one really stepping up and demanding to be selected, particularly openers. And now in the matter of a month we've had both McIntosh and Guptill show off their stuff.

It's early days, but it's looking hopeful for NZ's top order in the next few years, which has been a very long problem, Mark Richardson aside.

I'm starting to form the opinion that they should drop McCullum down the order to bat the last 10 overs for a wee while, and keep Guptill to open with Ryder. McCullum's batting form hasn't quite been there and it seems silly to move a guy who made a century opening on debut.

I also like the mix of one person to play through the innings and one smasher, rather than two smashers. Astle was very successful in that playing through role so many times.

  • Hard News: Conversation Starters,

Late to the discussion, it's taken me a couple of days to catch up on over a week of PAS (among other things).

Anarchy is a great idea, until you want to interact with a world that's based around concepts of state-enforced law.

I don't an anarchy model of states works very well, but I see a postal system and a telecommunications system as not really being problems. Any 'anarchist state' simply has to reach agreement with other states in a contract, they're unlikely to turn down the money just because it doesn't come from a Prime Minister.

Just because anarchsim doesn't have state-enforced laws by central leaders, doesn't mean it doesn't have rules and order. That's a misreading of the strong differences between 'anarchy' and 'anarchism'.

Even if most of their profits come from pokies?

The pokies would still exist in private establishments, just some of their profits would go to the establishment, and less to trusts that put the money into the community.

Also, I just wish to add that I don't like fresh tomatoes, and neither does my son. He doesn't eat them at all, I only eat them because I love everything else in a greek salad, and it just has to be done.

Therefore all you freaks that claim to like fresh tomatoes either did it to be cool, or you were sucked in by the red colour, and you've learnt to like them. Nyer.

  • Up Front: The Home Straight,

Having just done the Picton to Dunedin run two days ago, off the morning ferry, in the ridiculous heat, this post felt like doing parts of it again.

This is the first time I've done the trip with dogs, so while previously it was a case of finding good playgrounds (Ashburton has a great one at the domain), now it's a case of finding isolated beaches and rivers (one of my dogs doesn't play nicely with small canines). There's a great stony beach a little north of Kaikoura, the water quickly goes from lovely aqua to deep blue, crashing on stones, including what my son described as the perfect skimming stone. The dogs threw themselves into the water and then went and found some disgusting mud to run through and bring back into the car.

The whole car (except the dogs) did the Rakaia bridge. It's important to slow down before you get there and let the car in front get ahead a little. You need to do the whole bridge at a consistent 100 to be fair.

I'm tremendously disappointed that the bridge just north of Seddon (one lane vehicle, rail line directly overhead) is now closed and you can't drive on it at all. Sure, the new road is faster, but that was a great bridge to drive on, kids loved it.

  • Field Theory: Sunshine? Bah!,

Except in 20-20. (So long as we're splitting these particular hairs).

Not true now (not sure what the case was when they had bowloffs).

The match is 'tied', but the game is won after the super overs. Which makes no sense, but see the recent tie between NZ and WI as evidence.

  • Random Play: @fltfoxz. Gr8. C u 2moro,

Finally after some internal debate and angsting I stood up and announced to the rest of the occupants of the theatre that the guy next to me "was masturbating.

    10 points!

On Graham's original question, I dunno about texting, but I once realised that I should have phoned a girlfriend when I was a gig in Auckland in 2001, and just let the phone pick up the lyrics to a song that she had wanted to hear, but wasn't able to come with me to hear.

I realised this after the gig of course.

PE (!) teacher, 1985 (years before actually needed): Harry HE LIkes BEer By Cupfuls Not Over Flowing

Having sat through three years of high school science, I find myself only ever able to remember the first dozen or so elements of the periodic table. I suspect the latter sentences of the memory tool weren't a very interesting story.

  • Up Front: Absence of Malice,

The subject, even the question, are seared into my brain forever.

I've had a lingering belief in the power of silly ditties in memory ever since a 1989 Economic Studies test in which my friend and I conferred afterwards to check we'd got the same on the multi choice section.

    The answers to the six questions were C, B, D, C, C, D.

Which I still remember because straight after the test my friend asked me "Did you get cabbage, banana, dog, cabbage, cabbage, dog?"

    Er, as you were.

  • Current Status: Holidays,

Random holiday request: the ideal summer beer

Monteiths have really lost it with the summer ale and the radler. The former is at best reasonable, and 'different', the radler is pretty awful. It reminds me of when I went through Canada a few years ago and the locals encouraged me to try their raspberry beers. After a few sips my only question was "why mix together two perfectly fine tasting liquids to make this?"

Speights summer ale is very good, surprisingly. I did their tour via a work do a wee while ago and think I downed about a litre of it via the little 150 ml glasses.

Macs Hop Rocker and their Sun whatsit are pretty good.

Emersons is fantastic, try the Maris Gold for a summery mood, or their organic pilsner for just good beer. Pricey though.

But they wouldn't even mention that much if she were a farmer or office worker..

It probably wouldn't always get such centre stage, but occupations of victims are often mentioned in news stories. And criminals.
