  • Hard News: Essay Question,

It seriously boggles the mind and it's one reason why I don't think I could post on that board- he's just so unpleasant to read.

Luckily his behaviour on here caused Russell to ban him pretty quick.

I found that kiwiblog thread to just be painful. I felt like I needed to phone my isp and demand a refund on my kilobytes downloaded. Worse than even their normal threads.

  • Hard News: The Flashing Question Mark,

And for all those of us who have kids who feed off PC Games it's a bit of an essential.

This feels like a comment that predates macs using intel chips. It's come out of a timewarp or something.

  • Hard News: The Flashing Question Mark,

As a side note Russell, your question mark is a problem with the hardware, and you might want it checked out. The permissions is a problem with the content of the drive (uhh, computer confused) and unlikely to be related. Permission problems tend to build up over time with your computer, and eventually one causes your OS to 'get confused', for want of a better word.

The question mark most likely means your hard drive is working its way towards the trash can, and at the very least you should confirm that your time machine backups are working (and going to an external drive, obviously, Time Machine is only half as useful when it goes to the main hard drive).

Having got a free warning after all...

  • Hard News: The Flashing Question Mark,

Is a flashing question mark the user friendly Mac equivalent a Blue Screen Of Death? Or of the noted Yugoslavian, Kernel Panic?

The flashing question mark is the mac equivalent of the PCs: Unable to find HDD, press delete to enter setup.

The Multilingual screen of death is the mac equivalent of BSOD, but a lot of mac users would go through a whole computer lifetime and never see it, unlike it's regular (less regular now according to my home vista machine) visits to PC users.

  • Hard News: Essay Question,

And yes, he was a 40 yr old earing what, $600/wk gross from NZ Police for services rendered (one hopes that he contributed to Kiwisaver, and got the 4% contribution from Police as well), while Ms Rees is a computer geek who probably could earn that amount in two days doing, well, what ever it is computer geeks do.

I presume that screwing over his girlfriend is his after-hours job. Dunno what he does during the day.

Can anyone recommend something I can take that will make me feel clean again?

I think I agreed with three sentences, and the rest was rubbish.

The connection between the evidence (police spying on protest groups) and the conclusion (traffic needs to be separated from police more), I must have missed.

  • Hard News: Essay Question,

Meh... so tapping someone's phone and diverting their e-mail isn't pretty scumbag as well?

Given what he was doing, I don't have a problem with it. I don't think many other people will either. I also wouldn't have minded if she eavesdropped on him, or followed him around and got the same information.

If she'd been wrong, and he wasn't being a shithead, well it would have been a bad move on her part. She was right, and good on her for finding out and outting him and the police.

It's amazing that in effect, it really hasn't progressed beyond the stage it was more than 18 months ago, when I wrote a feature on the debacle for Critic.

I was quite in favour of Dunedin having a new stadium. I think stadiums in residential areas are just foolish, and if it had been the first stadium in NZ with a roof on it then I thought that would probably draw in as many events as the additional cost, and improve the quality.

Sadly, Otago Rugby and Cricket can't play nicely together, so you won't be able to play cricket there. I would have thought that someone with a bit of design sense would have been able to contract the field with more seating for rugby, and park those seats under the stands to make the field bigger for cricket.

It's gone pretty much no where over the past two years while they've been arguing about funding rather than actually beginning the process of getting consents and building. And as Paul and Matthew have noted, the people pushing it haven't done a very good job of making their case.

What annoys me is that it will fall over, probably rightly so at this stage, and then money will be thrown at Carisbrook, which is just throwing good money after bad. No one will be brave enough to suggest that Dunedin have a decent venue for another few decades. As Legbreak notes, Carisbrook is just crap, and I've only taken my son there once.

But passive-aggression never goes out of style.

Wait, Craig is having a go at other people for being passive-aggressive? Umm, OK.
