And the All Blacks are the smuggest, most self-righteous, jumped-up, arrogant team in the whole of sport. Bar none.

I think the Australian cricket team top them. And several American sports franchises.

I can't believe no-one has responded to Ian's story, which is very funny and perfect for a sunny afternoon.

Personally I would die happy if I could find a way to have a family of otters living in my backyard.

  • Island Life: The Art of the Deal,

I saw Goff on Lambton Quay (outside Farmers) about an hour ago.

Courting the rural vote already huh?

    I never shopped at Shell.

    ...

It was only a habit though, and Fly Buys helped to break it.

I haven't shopped at Shell since they were entangled in the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa in 1995, while I was protesting at the CHOGM meeting in Auckland. Despite being having made other purchasing decisions on the basis of fly buys, I've avoided Shell for the past 13 years and will continue to do so.

I buy all my petrol from BP. I'm not sure if I could come up with a better reason than being sucked in by the green colour.

    __Hayden; bible-bashing redneck.__

I will admit to having a "What the deuce?!" moment when I read that.

And they spelt your name wrong too!

Chicken or the egg - what comes first? Which is, I think, where Rachel came in.

    Yes.

But some people have a whole chicken farm, and others not so much. In the election it's more important to know who has how many, where they come from is a secondary concern.

I'd rather have genuinely inclusive legislation, and let the semantics take care of themselves. But I did say I was going leave this alone, and should be out in the garden anyway...

I'd presume that most same-sex couples wouldn't call each other 'husband' and 'wife' if married so that wouldn't change, legalised same-sex marriage or not.

Your claims to leave this alone, while still commenting intrigues me. I have a picture of you walking away from the computer only to be mysteriously dragged back to just make a tiny point, honest!

That hardly means that Goff -- whose party won many more party votes in the Maori electorates than any other -- is forbidden to pass any comment that might offend Tariana Turia.

I don't think he's forbidden at all. I just think it was bad politics.

Assuming Maori Party don't self-destruct, or get burnt by this deal, they're likely to be back in with five or more seats in three years.

Surely Goff's job is to be finding ways to make it so those seats are lining up next to Labour in 2011, not National.

It looked to me like he was still fighting the 2008 election (which is definitely done), rather than looking ahead to the 2011 one.

  • Hard News: Rethinking the EFA,

The whole argument against money spent on advertising hinges on the notion that vast swathes of voters are braindead, which seems ironic whistled in the same breath as 'long live democracy'.

It hinges on no such notion.

It hinges on the notion that advertising is an effective way to sway people's decisions - political, consumer, social etc.

As proven by the fact that companies and government organisations, including political parties, spend vast amounts of money advertising to achieve that very result.

I take the view that this is one of those things that will simply be brought about by custom. Nearly everyone already refers to civil union ceremonies as "weddings" anyway.

Yeah. Not yet having been part of the Civil Union Ceremony, I found it strange the use of the word 'wife', but each to their own :)

I wonder if a better tradition might be finding a more inclusive word. Husband and wife point back to heterosexual relationships, maybe more ownership of the word 'partner' by heterosexual couples in formal relationships could be a good thing.
