If you had been torrenting a movie or the latest album by someone an old fart like me has never heard of, it would have inconvenienced you momentarily, but you found a way round it so it's hardly a good way of preventing piracy, is it?

No. But if SkyTV got NHL back on TV, I would be much of a pirate. I still buy most of the music that I want on CDs.

I still haven't seen anything in any of these threads which has jumped out and I've thought "ooh, that's a good possible solution". But keep talking past each other, at least RB is collecting advertising revenue.

  • Hard News: Congratulations, Mr Key,

If they weren't thoroughly pickled in bitter crazy juice, you betcha.

    So what's that? 50/50 odds then? ;)

Case in point, a few threads ago Kyle wished that someone would start an inquiry based for once entirely on non-partisan desire to protect our democracy. It wouldn't have done him any harm to have wished that everyone get a pony too

Oh look, now you've gone and blown it. Once you asked for the pony, it'll never happen!

Whale Oil finishes by adding to ACT's list that Roger Douglas be the head of the "Razor gang", establishing an independent anti-corruption commission and a "Commissioner of Unions to ensure open, transparent, accountable trade unions operate in the best interests of their members."

Wow, that sounds like a bunch of fun. Open warfare between the bureaucrats/unions on one side, and the government on the other.

OK which of the 6,000 Public Servants are going to get the chop?

The figure I heard on radio yesterday was a reduction from 42,000 to 36,000 under National. It said it was National policy. Which I thought I would have heard more about before the election, if it's true.

They got no votes on Great Barrier

Maybe TV3 coverage isn't good out at Great Barrier, so they don't get them?

  • Hard News: Prospects,

Ben, your assumption about ready access to specialist assessment is sadly untrue. Even that part of the process is horribly underfunded and often requires persistent advocacy from parents.

Definitely true. My mother works with kids with various special needs, and her #1 piece of advice to the parents is to be aggressive and demanding and learn how to get as much as possible out of the system.

Which is sad that it's like that, but if it was my kid, I'd be doing it too.

He laughed. Not practical to technically implement. Not by a long shot.

A little off topic, but I've noticed over the past few months my ISP has been doing some pretty aggressive traffic throttling.

But my downloads went from anywhere between 50 - 150 K/second, to 1 - 10 K/second. Evenings were a waste of time, overnight if you were lucky you'd get up to 20K or so. It was taking a couple of days to download a 700 MB file.

I did a bit of googling and switched my torrent application from bittorrent, to Vuxe, which had encoding. Since then it's jumped back up and I'm happily torrentting again.

  • Hard News: Congratulations, Mr Key,

Latin America, Asia, Africa. When rainforests are cut down to make way for cattle ranchers, saying lets increase the world price of beef is a chain of logic that does not work.

If we could have more control over the chopping down of rainforests, I'm sure we would, but they're not our rainforests.

The excuse "this is a bad thing, but other countries are worse at it" always feels pretty lame to me in relation to the climate. We don't own the planet, but we do need to take a bit more responsibility for our part of it, and encourage other countries to do the same.

Particularly when it ends up with arguing for polluters in our country getting a freer ride.

And gee Messam looked good running around the field too.

Loose forwards in NZ, we need to patent those genes or something.

Adam Thompson -- so fast to the breakdown, so useless once he gets there. But he does seem to be improving a bit. If he can improve his effectiveness in that respect, he'll be a useful player.

From the little I've seen of him, he's a very good open field runner. Was it against Wellington in the Air NZ Cup he got a couple of tries? - one an intercept, but one a clean line break running like a number 13 should.

If he can spend more time next to McCaw learning to be the most hated man on the other side of a ruck/maul, he'll be a good #7.

I think it would be helpful to give the score when writing about a sporting event, just for those of us who don't really care.

Can I just mention Prime TV here.

30 minutes into their delayed coverage of the All Blacks/Scotland match yesterday, ad break, they promote their 5.30 news and say "All Blacks beat Scotland". Duh. Having avoided radio and internet news all day, the channel showing the game gives away the result. Thanks.

(Later ads for the news said "All Blacks and Kiwis have tough battles", so presumably someone got hit over the head)

And speaking of the white jerseys, I thought Scotland played in Navy at home and only donned the white when playing the All Blacks on the road. Do I have that backwards?

I believe so. All Blacks always seemed to play in white when Scotland came here.

I presume that the ABs, as top qualifier, were technically 'home' in Cardiff against the French last year, so had to change their tops, unless the rule has changed.

Ice hockey (at least in the NHL) has a very sensible rule for this. Each team has a dark top, and a light top. You wear your dark top when playing at home, and your light top when playing away. It's impossible to get a uniform clash as a result.

And gives you more variety in merchandising as well.
