My uncle came out a while back, now one of his brothers won't speak to him and even keeps all the children away from him at family gatherings.
Be easier at work where it doesn't (shouldn't) have any impact on how you do your job.

Yes true, often it will be the other way around.

I suspect 'rejected by family/best friends' stories are the worst to hear.

Wouldn't the world be a better place if he's beating Dubya in 2000?

I think the world would be a better place if just about anyone had beat Dubya in 2000. Gore, McCain, a monkey...

My bet is that he'll go two terms, and even then, if the Dems lose it will be because they can't find a half-way good successor.

The successor will be interesting. Biden is 66 now, 74 in eight years. He probably won't stand. Which means either a different VP candidate in 4 years, or a person not from the 2012 ticket standing.

And then he beat the best Rep candidate since pre-Nixon days.

One suspects Ronald Reagan might be rated as a better candidate, depending on your criteria.

I think the Repubs are toast, as a single party. I heard one guy, I think on BBC, say that Obama had "broken the Republican coalition" and I think that is indeed what has happened.

Meh. This is relatively minor, compared to say, Watergate. Bush will be shoved out the door ungraciously and the party will move on in its muddling way. 8 years from now they'll be a strong, morals, christian base party again. Too many people that want that in America for it not to work. It'd be nice to say that the whacko fundies would dwindle off into not much, but that's a big part of the electorate in America.

    And how is it now?

I suspect it varies from from "not too bad" to "not a good environment at all".

I would imagine, for example, that young people still at school would have to be pretty brave to come out, particularly with some schools. I was really impressed by the two young women who were on TV recently protesting that their school wasn't allowing them to take a same sex partner to their ball.

Some sports clubs, aren't exactly a haven for queer-friendly people either. I could imagine people being out to close friends and family, but not at work and other places, just because people knowing about your sexuality shouldn't give you that much grief.

  • Hard News: History is now,

Great going TVNZ! Truelly the home of news.

National Radio NZ carried both speeches live, in full. I switched back to the radio after TV back to... whatever Key and English are bitching about Labour about at the moment.

Did anyone catch all of McCain's speech? I went into the supermarket, but I thought I caught all of his "thank you to" people, and he didn't mention Palin at all. Did I miss it?

  • Hard News: History is now,

I have some very excited friends in the DC commuter belt in Virginia. Go blue, Virginia! Go blue!

It's looking real likely. CNN has him about 50 thousand ahead there now with 90% of precincts in.

Both N Carolina and Indiana are McCain at present, but not by much. Indiana will probably go McCain, too early to call on NC.

Florida is gone to Obama but they're all too scared to call it. He's a couple of hundred thousand ahead there with 3/4 of the vote in.

Obama still well ahead in NC, OH and FL. Any one of those three finishes it, all three makes it a stroll to the finish line.

  • Hard News: History is now,

    CNN finally projects Pennsylvania.

They haven't added them onto his electoral college totals though. Still says 81 at the top of the page, should be 102.

  • Hard News: History is now,

CNN now gives 81 Electoral votes to Obama - the North eastern seaboard is pleasantly blue

Popular vote is basically locked together, over 7 million votes each, only 6 million between them. Probably Obama will slip under in the 'flyover' states, and then trounce back out West and finish ahead by maybe 10 million.
