I'm cheering myself up with these lovely pics.

I don't know why, but the first photo of him in the bumper car is reassuring.

There's a man who looks like he's not scared to just have some fun with his family. Looks like the sort of person you could meet at a family bbq and not leave feeling like you're covered in political slime.

  • Field Theory: Athletes and Dicks,

For me the problem was as a player on the field I would be understandably distracted if my other half was sitting on the lap of the guy paying me money to dance for his amusement. Stanford should've been blown up, but it should mainly have come from the players and then the media.

In many sports, the players would have stopped playing, grabbed their bat, and marched up into the stands to teach him a lesson.

  • Hard News: Punk'd?,

    The latter.

    I suspect you're right Craig.

But still, I am glad to see these stories seeing the light of day. It is reassuring that Winston/Glenn & Winston/Vela & Dunne/Vela might be the worst of the political corruption in NZ. You don't have to look long at American politics to see a scary alternative.

Report: ES&S Voting Machines Can Be Maliciously Calibrated to Favor Specific Candidates

Blaze said the calibration function on the ES&S machine isn't password-protected, making it easy for a poll worker -- or even a voter -- to access the calibration menu in the middle of an election using a PEB device (Personalized Electronic Ballot), which election officials insert in a port on the face of the machine. A PEB might be stolen or purchased online, or an intruder can simulate a PEB by using a Palm Pilot or other handheld device with an infrared port.

  • Legal Beagle: Enhancing democracy,

Spamming the ballot? Wouldn't do too much harm.

Wouldn't it be possible, if there were bills in the ballot that you didn't want to appear, to spam the ballot with duplicates which would drastically reduce the chances of them seeing the light of day?

If there were 10 bills in the ballot, you have a 1 in ten chance. If someone drops in 40 more bills, you suddenly have a 1 in 50 chance.

Indeed, if you allowed duplicates, wouldn't it rapidly get stupid, and parties would simply provide one copy of each bill from each of their MPs, to get maximum chance of it being picked out of the ballot? The chances of your bills coming out would be proportionate to the number of MPs you had.

  • Hard News: God's squads,

Could it simply be that Labour and National have rightly cottoned on to the fact that electorates just don't matter squat to them?

I suspect they think they're quite important. Manning's article was interesting in how he linked an active and good electorate MP to bringing out a strong vote next time in both electorate and party vote.

Taking an electorate off a party gives you a base, funds to build up a profile in your area, and pays you to do work which helps come next election.

MMP, definitely not the death of electoral politics.

Well they also bought us the motorcar, and hip-hop (and jazz and blues and rock and roll I believe), and space travel.

There's no space travel in NZ. And, the USSR was first one that one anyway.

But, seriously? I thought it was going to be special after 2000, when they were surely and obviously going to reform their political system right in front of me.

Did anyone see Recount on Prime the other night?

Even with the understanding that it had a bit of fiction mixed in with the facts, it was disturbing to relive eight years ago. Fucked up in a "oh no, we're not actually going to count the votes" kinda way.

  • Hard News: Granny for Sale,

What form could the Labour Party possibly use to start demanding an inquiry in 2009 without looking like hypocrites?

Just occasionally it'd be nice to hear people starting an investigation because it was the right thing to do to help protect our democracy.

    Dreams are free, I know.

  • Hard News: Granny for Sale,

You mean the one that was cleared of being too young?

My point was, the IOC avoided as much as possible having that information themselves. They trusted the Chinese Olympic Committee, and stated as such. FIFA is probably running the same line.
