Product placement in shows has been happening for years and years.
I mean, as people watch less and less adverts, because they no longer have to watch TV live, companies will have to find other ways to get their products in front of the consumer. More frequent, but shorter ad breaks, produce placement, endorsement by commentators etc. There is some of this now, if millions of advertising dollars shifted across, it would become much much worse.

You really just need a compass and your eyes.
I can't believe I left my boy scout kit at home last time I visited.

I personally feel that by not watching the ads you're stealing television.
Sadly I suspect that things like mysky are going to be pushing us down the line of produce placement and endorsements. I listened to an ice hockey commentator the other day babble on about some car or something, instead of discussing the actual game.
If cans of coke start mysteriously appearing on Lost, held logo to the camera, I'm going to throw something at the TV.

For those who want to poke around in the book, but don't own a copy, it's reproduced here on a wiki (which seems to make it editable, which could be interesting).
I presume done so with the permission of the publishers/author.

The issue of clearing and securing rights for the material on NZ On Screen has been a complex minefield of issues. Almost every single title has a different scenario.
Brenda, are NZ on Air looking ahead into the future on this one? Someone has mentioned previously that when funding music videos, having the video go on youtube is a requirement.
Are the contracts for TV programmes being funded from now on being amended to allow for movement onto nzonscreen automatically? After a certain period of time for example?

The 'shocking mistreatment of children' side? Oh wait, Rodney wasn't there, it's okay ;)
It does raise the question...
If you gave your baby to Rodney Hide, for a baby kissing moment (ew).
Would he drop it on its head?

Contracts will typically mention all the possible uses the actor's work and image will end up in.
LOTR actors for example, had clauses in their contracts relating to merchandising. There may be differing clauses relating to the movie release, and dvds.
The writer's strike in the US a while ago was about use of the writer's work on the internet, which was becoming an increasing use of their work, for which they felt they weren't being rewarded properly.

With something like shortland street how hard can it be. they keep accurate records.
One suspects it would need to be put into all the actor's/extra's contracts at the beginning. A season of shortland street must include hundreds of people who have given up their rights to have it displayed on tv. Getting them all to agree to put it up on the internet must be a nightmare. And then if one disagrees, what do you do? Cut out that scene?

There are two places in New Zealand that I always seem to get lost in
Hello, Christchurch? Which is what you get when you build a city on a flat swamp.

Perhaps it is time for a 'Slow Life" movement.
That's the hours between waking up and having lunch isn't it? Other people only get a moment?
