  • Field Theory: This one's for Don,

A bit like the way everyone hated Auckland when they used to win everything.

Well they fixed that this season. Must be the most loved team in the competition.

  • Field Theory: Sunday Bloody Sunday Newspaper,

I recall how we had a half dozen sporting world champions at one point who'd garnered not one iota of national coverage between them (before it became a talking point, at least).

Nicole Begg got a couple of brief news stories when she won the world inline speed skating title.

She got way more coverage when she took her clothes off and had the photos published to improve her profile and try and attract sponsors.

Which raises many interesting questions about what women have to do in order to be supported in their sport.

But exactly what do the Maori Party and Labour mean by "consent", and exactly who counts as 'Maori' for the purposes of this exercise?

Who knows what consent would mean, but Maori isn't exactly undefined in umpteen places in NZ law, including electoral law.

And could someone ask Mrs Turia whether her attachment to the electoral norms of the 19th century means she intends to resign from Parliament, after introducing bills to repeal women's suffrage and reintroduce the property qualification the Maori seat were basically intended to mitigate in the first place?

Yup. Because if we have one thing from a couple of centuries ago, we need to have everything from a couple of centuries ago.

The election hasn't even occurred yet but the fissures in the Maori Party are plain for all to see, and appear to be widening.

The Maori Party with Sharples at its head would interest me a lot more than the current incarnation. He seems to be much more likely to have his head on the right way than Turia does.

  • Hard News: Proud Wednesday,

Flash isn't the best thing going and your buffering is pretty darn slow - I couldn't wait for the 1st Patu segment to finish loading and went to bed TBH.

It seems to work basically the same as youtube. I always just pause a video as soon as it starts, and then it buffers ahead of itself, and I watch it a few minutes later so that I don't have it stop and start. Always works perfectly well, not their fault my broadband isn't top speed.

As people have pointed out, there's several bits of software which will capture it as it streams and work as if it's been downloaded.

The comedy central web site where I watch any daily show clips that I miss is much more annoying. It does buffer ahead, but it seems to have a buffering limit, and it doesn't indicate how far ahead it is, and sometimes if you hit pause the player just stops working and you have to restart your browser. Not sure what file type they're using, but to be avoided.

Yeah. In which case, what are the Maori Party talking about?

    That's pretty significant electoral change

It would really depend what entrenchment means. If they mean can only be repealed by a vote of 3/4 of the house (for example), do they have to have a 3/4 vote to get it?

And then let Labour learn what it's like being called haters and wreckers for a change; the kind of people who are more interested in power than the country's good at a time of economic crisis.

    Yes please.

Craig's a starter for 10, lets do it!

    Ignored...NOT!

I give you the Artificial Gravity Generator (retconned admittedly)

Oh sorry. Magic-box-which-gives-gravity-to-whole-ship then. With tights-don't-ladder-on-our-ship module attached.

No doubt the box took up the whole bottom of the ship, otherwise anyone on the outside of the ship would be pulled towards the middle, where the box was.

  • Discussion: On Copyright,

I'm seeing figures posted by the 'industry' but I'm not seeing artists putting their hands up and saying "we're losing money to piracy' with evidence to back it up.

Is this an argument that people use in relation to software/dvd piracy? That people wouldn't have bought it if they couldn't have gotten it for free?

I've seen it a fair bit in relation to music, does it get play in other similar fields?

Aah, but in the early days of space travel, who's to say they weren't? I never once saw Nichelle Nicoles with a ladder in her tights suggesting some sort of low-grav advantages may apply up there.

Star Trek conveniently ignored the absence or variations in gravity inherent in space travel. Everyone had their feet firmly on the ground throughout.

Maybe they were super-strong space tights.
