Thinking of my brother in law specifically, that statement was true a few months ago, but no longer.

Yeah, there will be lots of exceptions. As was pointed out, a bunch of people working minimum wage will have signed up to kiwisaver and will therefore probably own some shares. Possibly even three or four.

But in terms of amount of money on average invested in the stock market, there's a curve that goes up on average as incomes go up.

  • Hard News: Life Goes On,

Out of interest, how do you know?

I don't know about overwhelmingly rich people, but it's not rocket science to say that shares will be much more likely to be owned by people who are richer than those who don't own shares.

Government intervention to prop up or boost or anything that leads to general increases in share prices is certainly likely to help richer people, and not so likely to help poorer people.

    Are you sure Kyle?

That's not me you're quoting. So I'm probably not sure :)

If the Simpsons have taught us nothing else, is that those scams tend to backfire.

Actually, I've seen that in the paper several times, so clearly it works for someone.

The first person that gets caught and outed as doing it as a scam. Man, everyone is going to hate them.

Well, I'd concede the first ten minutes were something else, it's the rest of the film I felt was all over the place

It might have something to do with the fact that Romeo and Juliet is not, contrary to what I was told in high school English, the 'greatest love story ever', but a stupid story which makes very little sense and which makes me want to beat up the lead characters for being prissy little morons.

    Umm, as you were.

Yeah but there are ten people on the court and only one standing still with the ball.

If you're blogging quite a lot about sports, you should get the numbers right. Basketball has 10 on the court, netball has 14.

This is a general question, not just to Don: is there any sport where you find women's version is more interesting than the men's?

Surely if your answer is a sport in which there's no difference between the two other than the participants (hockey), then you're actually answering a question of 'who do you prefer to see playing this sport', not 'do you prefer the women's version to the men's version'. There's no difference between the women's and men's versions of most sports.

Ice hockey has different rules for men and women. Women can't play checking ice hockey once they are senior. So if you like ice hockey without people taking big runs at each other and mashing each other against the boards and getting into fights, you might prefer the women's version.

  • Discussion: On Copyright,

true, but mostly in name alone. how much power do they have left over the colonies now?
its hard to feel ruled by someone who is pretty much a tourist attraction.

All laws in NZ come from 'the crown'. It's not a reference to the person, it's a reference to the state when the head of state is royalty.

since we don't have a crown anymore, isn't that concept outdated.

    Umm, yes we do.

Netball has that. See Donna Loffhagen in the 1999 World Championship final.

I thought you couldn't shoot until you were in the bottom third. Or is it that you only can't pass through a third of the court, but shooting is fine?

John, to be fair I don't think Key was talking about divesting - and I heard him say something about letting the fund Guardians decide how long to take to reach that 40% target - which makes a mockery of any short term benefits. Sounds decisive I guess. Just typical campaigning talk.

Even if they did take their time reaching the target, it would still have an impact on share prices.

Soon as the government passed the law or announced the policy, all share prices in NZ would jump about 10% or so, in anticipation.

Even if they then floated down, it'd jump again every time they threw half a billion dollars at something or other. It's just hard to invest that much money in a small stock market without bumping up the prices for yourself.
