  • Hard News: Safari 4 beta: seriously quick,

Sometimes I'll open a few more just to get it up to three figures. Impresses the kids.

Next you'll be telling us that they like your funky middle-aged white man dance moves.

I'm going to translate "impresses" as: "yeah Dad, great, well done, you're the bomb. Can we have the computer back now? You're wasting the internet."

Catalogue acquisition is what made Universal the biggest of all the majors and even if they stopped releasing new acts, which for a couple of the majors ain't outside the realms of possibility and has been much discussed, they'd still turn a hefty profit.

Presumably there will continue to be a conversion of old music to digital and making it available. Even if the demand is relatively small, the investment and ongoing costs for providing reasonable digital is probably pretty small, so over 20 years of selling not very much, that still makes a profit.

  • Hard News: The strange story arc,

They're bloody clever, those media companies. I'm surprised they find it so hard to make money...

I hear it's because everyone is stealing their movies over the intawebs.

I know someone who's in a prison professionally.

I didn't know there was money in it! All this time I've been wasting, I should be off robbing banks and getting caught.

  • Hard News: Play Time,

You also displayed an admirable sense of duty in taking over the bar.

The people that volunteer to take over the bar are always the worse choice.

My friend Baxter (who many people who passed through Otago University will recognise or know of) once volunteered to take over the bar at the Capping Show. By the end of the night they were down most of a pallet of beer, and the Selwyn ballet were mightily pissed. I don't believe any alcohol was actually sold.

Though if they can preserve the gene that once made the respectably hung Ewan McGregor get his ting-tong out in every other movie, I would be grateful.

Well that's not going to work. He did Robots, followed by Valiant. Though maybe Robots, with its bits and pieces fix the robots theme, they could have slipped it in, in a way that kids wouldn't notice.

I wonder if that function will become part of the bittorrent clients sometime soon.

Exactly. Last year I switched to a bittorrent client which used encoding, as my ISP was strangling my old client.

The demand is there, the technology will move ahead.

Prisons in NZ are largely unchanged from 50, 100, or even 200 years ago. They do very little to stop reoffending, because that has never been part of their design.

Well that's not true. Apart from the fact that we didn't have prisons 200 years ago.

Prisons are very different, and in some areas NZ Corrections have programmes of international standards in terms of recidivism.

A comparison of Mt Eden with any of the new prisons that have just been built would show that they're vastly different.

ideally, rules should be there for a good reason, and rules set up without any good reason have the effect of wasting a lot of time.

Russell, Ben Wilson seems to have hacked Linger's account.

  • Hard News: High Noon,

On s92a, I just feel that as a general principle, if you have a business model that isn't working, you shouldn't be entitled to have the government change the law and crush peoples rights in order to shore that model up.

I don't mind things changing. In fact I think that's a good thing for this business model: it's old, and it'd be a better model if the artists saw more, the end product cost less, and there was a lot less inbetween the two.

I do think that 'this brave new world' has to be careful that we don't end up with less, or not as good, culture, through this sort of idea.

I mean there's no good business model to support a professional ballet troupe in NZ - it get subsidised. Does that mean that they should all be out on their tutus?

Should major record labels be subsidised so that we continue to get their music? No. But we also shouldn't shoot ourselves in the foot now that we've found out we can get most of the stuff for free.
