  • Hard News: Safari 4 beta: seriously quick,

I've stayed well away from outlook at home, but at work I use entourage to (increasingly) organise my work life. I only switched a few weeks ago from using Apple mail, Address Book, and iCal.

Emails, calendar, contacts, to do lists etc.

Curious if anyone else has used entourage and how they've found it.

Call me silly, but wouldn't it be easier to just spend the money in areas that need it - smaller classes, more doctors and nurses, housing improvements, etc. Of course that would be less efficient in helping those that really need the cash - said Friends Of John.

I'm no expert in economic stimulus but...

Some things, when you 'throw' money at them, lead to greater economic effects than others.

If I subsidise you $1 million of the cost of building something, and you pay the other $4 million I'm getting 5 times the economic bang for my buck.

If I pay you $1 million to employ more teachers, I'm getting equal money for my buck (well, actually more than that, there are flow-on economic and other benefits from employing more teachers, but they're not as tangible).

I would presume the national government is looking for 'little things' that they can do, so that business keeps investing, employing people, building stuff, selling things etc. If the government can pay for 10% of things (say a small benefit for me to stop working that 5th day), and business pays the other 90% and stays open and doing stuff, that's probably a good return for government investment.

That's why we're probably not going to see any economic rescue packages which focus on reducing hospital waiting queues for the elderly. Little economic stimulus, not much economic flow on effects, sorry elderly.

  • Up Front: The Holland Diaries, Pt 1,

I think NZSL has a lot to offer stroke victims.

Also DS kids, who will typically develop spoken language a lot later, so often learn sign language from one year old. I've seen my niece do the sign for 'crackers' umpteen times :)

  • Legal Beagle: Three strikes (w/ updates),

OK, so it's a limitation of parole for the mid-range sentences (less than life, but enough for second strike) to six months? If I've understood that correctly.

Still not good, but probably not going to affect thousands of people.

    True! Therefore:

"We should punish them by releasing them the day after they get put into prison, so that they feel the warmth and leisure of the prison system, but then get denied it and released into the harsh world of parole and weekly checkups with their parole officer."

SST policy practically writes itself doesn't it?

  • Hard News: The strange story arc,

Isn't the Police Association a union? They get a lot of TV coverage. And, I might add, you always know what Greg O'Connor is going to say, regardless of what facts are known, so it seems a little pointless.

Yes, and they do get a lot of coverage. I suspect that relates to two reasons: 1. They're police, respected profession, voice of authority etc. But also 2. It's not just a Union, it's a professional body, like a medical or legal one. Just slightly unusual in that all its members are employed by the one employer.

  • Hard News: Mediocrity Watch,

I know a teenage boy who is just starting university this year .

He's 90-95% blind and has 'battled' his way through the education system.

I can't comment on any other university, but he might find things less of a battle at the tertiary level. Down here at least there's a strong disability service which works well for disabled students. They work with lecturers to get braille or digital versions of readings, they have a full time sign language interpreter, they deal with temporary and permanent physical disability issues. They have a core of full time staff and employ a number of students (notetakers etc) as well.

Cicadas, bug the hell out of me at 6am. Will miss 'em once theyve gone though!

Man, cicadas. I haven't thought about them in years. Certainly not something we hear around my house.

Is there a dividing line in NZ below which cicadas don't live?

The law does a couple of other things as well:

You know the current state of this law well Graeme.

Does this mean that we're going to be seeing more prisoners released later (either second strike, or murder on first strike) but with no parole at all?

Releasing serious violent offenders into the community without the oversight of parole terrifies me a lot more than releasing them earlier, but into the oversight of parole.

We do have a parole system for good reason after all.

I was just with my dogpack, and had an argument about why it's okay for women not to like their bodies.

See, I argue with my dogs about why they shouldn't be barking, coming and going when they don't want to, and about not stealing food.

Clearly your dogs are a lot smarter than mine.
