• Field Theory: Four Years Ago,

The name was officially shortened in 2006 with the removal of the world “Football”

Because the concept of kicking the ball brought back too many bad memories?

  • Field Theory: Four Years Ago,

Can someone explain how they can do this?

s.48 of the RWC Empowering Act allows the Minister to declare something a permitted activity. That seems to me to be rather different from taking someone's land under arbitrary central government control.

  • Field Theory: Four Years Ago, in reply to Rich Lock,

Those were state of the art in 2003. You should have upgraded long ago.

  • Field Theory: Four Years Ago,

the coverage of the actual games has been decidedly average.

    Students, mostly posh ones.

(My undertanding is that with American Football being pretty much a professional sport at college level in the US, rugby provides an alternative for people who want to play an oval ball game but aren't 300kg full-time athletes).

  • Field Theory: Four Years Ago,

I went and saw England play Fiji at Twickenham (82000 seats) in the 1998 RWC.

Public transport was the standard scheduled commuter services - I don't think they even had special trains. Needless to say, the trains were crammed, but they got us to and from Waterloo ok (we even picked up a stray commuter along the way who bought our spare ticket and wagged off work),

I'd take from that that if you have an adequate public transport system that's used by a majority on a normal basis, than it'll cope with special events without too much strain.

  • Hard News: Just don't call it "Party Central",

It is pretty unhealthy and will become germ ridden and disgusting

If they were selling decent beer it would infuse the wood and create a patina, also killing any microbes through alcoholic content. Mixture of H*******n and H*******n vomit, not so much.

  • Field Theory: Four Years Ago,

It's not that Veolia haven't got great references overseas for f..g up public transport - see Connex South Eastern.

I'm not blaming the local staff, it's probably impossible to run a commuter metro for short term corporate profit in the way they've been tasked to and offer reasonable service.

  • Hard News: Towards the Truth,

I'd argue that he was extremely lucky as RAF squadrons were in action in all the above.

I'm sure he'd have been up for it, but the vast majority of the RAF was strung across the eastern UK and northern Germany ready for the Big One. Which is the most important role of a military - ultimate national defence.
