  • Hard News: Is that it?,

    I'd agree with this https://twitter.com/samfromwgtn/status/102838514730795008.

Srsly, I'd be happy to facilitate anyone who wants to swap their food coupons for something they feel they want.

  • Hard News: London's Burning,

The juxtaposition of rich with poor stems from deliberate policy by the old LCC from the 1930's to “build the Tories out of London” (1) by building social housing in every ward.

Westminster council later notoriously attempted the reverse policy in attempting to privatise and demolish council estates. This was done in such a corrupt manner that the council leader wound up fleeing to Israel and later paying GBP12mln to settle the case.

    1. This phrase is disputedly attributed to Herbert Morrison.

  • Hard News: Angry and thrilled about Arie,

Gotta contrast Arie's treatment with the (reasonably) lenient treatment given to a security guard who stole over $2k worth of gear from the Harvey Norman he was "guarding".

I have difficulty understanding how (contrary to the bail laws) somebody could be jailed for stealing valueless items and not for egregious theft when in a position of trust. Maybe the real offence is conspicuously challenging authority - it's ok to loot as long as you do it discreetly while wearing some sort of uniform.

  • Legal Beagle: Crowdsourcing the referendum,

It lets you adjust all those assumptions - the ones they supply are defaults based on a same-as-last-time scenario I think.

It doesn't of course allow for changes in voting as a result of a change to the system, such as larger minor party votes if the threshold was abolished, or voters switching to major parties under FPP.

Also, does anyone know if the Jim Anderton Progressive Party are contesting the next election in the absence of their leader?

  • Southerly: One Hundred and Thirty-one…, in reply to Sacha,

Surely the building height is a matter for the building code and should be set according to engineering principles? It's possible to build tall buildings that withstand big earthquakes - whether it's economic to do so is another matter.

The city plan should be about what's appropriate from an urban design point of view, not what can safely be built.

@Gio, you could always implement that yourself using RSS. Work of moments.

@Steve, may I suggest the Camberwell Carrot.

@Gio & Craig: you are so cosmopolitan up in the big city. My neighbours are from the 'Naki.

@Tussock: they've got to get the rioting in now while petrol bombs are still affordable.

  • Hard News: London's Burning,

There are 400-odd unemployed people for every job advertised in Tottenham

That's kinda misleading though. If you live in a London suburb, you don't have to work there - tubes and buses, that sort of thing. The poor areas of London aren't that way because of an absolute lack of jobs (like a rust belt town in the states) - they're the places where you can get cheap housing.

The real problem is that there are a whole lot of people who aren't able to get and keep any sort of job anywhere - education, socialisation, employer prejudice, etc.
