  • Hard News: 2011: The Year Of What?, in reply to Sacha,

    Exactly.

For reference, I primarily won't vote Labour because of their policies:
    - I don't support locking innocent people up without trial
    - I want the right to choose what I put in my body
    - I don't want NZ entering into undemocratic 'free trade' agreements
    - I don't want NZ troops sent off to colonial wars, however much they want to go

The incompetence of Goff is a side issue (and the fact Labour can't find a decent leader is partly a consequence of their political stance)

We've got MMP (still) and that gives us the freedom to vote for who we agree with, not be forced into a binary Labour/National choice.

If Labour wants an enthusiastic support base on the Left, then it needs to radically rethink its whole policy structure.

Shandy Bass. 0.5% alcohol, made with real Bass Beer and officially classed as a soft drink.

Popular with kids in the UK, when I was one. Not sure if you can get it here - one sip of that for a 19 year old driver and you could lose your license, under National's non-nanny nanny state.

I see there’s going to have a French Festival. Ideal location.

It is scheduled to be before the first possible NZ/FR encounter in the knock-out stages, however.

It's only August. There's four more months to go.

Anyway, lots more happened in 1945. Or 1963.

  • Hard News: Angry and thrilled about Arie,

The Solicitor General can stay a prosecution, though. They don't usually, but they are entitled to conclude that a prosecution isn't in the public interest and stop it.

We are after all a democracy. The police are not gods.

  • Legal Beagle: Legislate in haste...,

Why don't they put a force majeure clause into the Statistics Act that lets any census be deferred in the event of a natural disaster that reasonably prevents it being conducted?

Then we'd have one less thing to worry about when the Big One takes out Wellington (or the Taupo supervolcano goes off again, converting the North Island into the Earth's second moon).

In fact, why don't we have a proper process of drafting some robust legislation that can kick in when disaster strikes, rather than legislating in panic at the time?

    Is roller derby a sport?

I reckon one could smoke while performing at it, and some judges might give you extra marks for doing so (is that how scoring works in RD?).

  • Hard News: Is that it?,

I guess teachers have a sense of social responsibility that stops them engaging in either collective action or aggressive individual bargaining to improve their pay.

(Maybe the ones that do become principals, and make large amounts of extra money from personally enrolling foreign students ).

are we just talking things that will benefit the advertiser, like accepting that paying over the odds for Telecom’s services is for the greater good?

That's about the size of it.
