The UK's got a big underclass that are outside any "social contract". They aren't materially poor in the sense of a third-world nation, or even New Zealand, but they exist outside the whole "legal" economic and social structure. When the cops threaten their livelihood, they'll fight back.
The other part is the whole social-control apparatus that the Brits have created. It isn't well tolerated. When you have a situation where the cops are setting up roadblocks and stopping everyone brown to check their immigration/welfare/vehicle status, they aren't going to be happy. An impression I got when I was last back in the UK was that the cops had quietly backed down on actually using a lot of their powers and were tolerating a lot of transgressions - especially when it was middle class kids doing the transgressing (see Scott's comment)
But as everything gets harsher economically, maybe the cops have been given the word to crack down, and that's led to it all kicking off again.
it would take about 15 million coppers to contain it. We actually have about 150,000
Incidentally, during the Northern Ireland troubles there were around 30,000 security force members, 70,000 Sinn Fein supporters and maybe 400 hardcore IRA operators. The UK underclass is way more numerous than the NI Catholics. If the UK's rulers want a military solution, it'll involve conscripting middle class English kids. That will not go down well.

private zones bleed into public ones
I was driving through the viaduct area once and a resident, whether oblivious to the idea that there were people in the street, or revelling in that fact, was standing naked behind his very obvious second floor end window.
Is that what you mean?

Hard News: Fixing Auckland, in reply to
Where though? I suppose the freight could go to Tauranga or Wellington (where we seem to have the wharves in a natural industrial area up-harbour from the CBD).
-
What happens to all the goods that used to be / are transferred through those wharfs. Aren't we going to need them (or to sell the exports) in the "weightless economy"?
Auckland's pretty much got glitzy housing on every inch of deep waterfront now, so nowhere to relocate the docks (like overseas cities did way back when).

So, a couple of thousand? That would match the first figure, on a basis of his readers averaging three visits a day.
That's less than the Oamaru Mail. Or the Upper Hutt Leader. Or Salient.
I suspect a lot of the reason he gets attention is that he's one of NACT's conduits, and the MSM know that.

the site would be a lot lower in the national blog statistics
How many people *actually* read Kiwiblog, or any blog, on a regular basis. Tens of thousands? (I couldn't find a number. I found that he's #63000 in the world, but no idea what that means as actual regular readers.
I'd say it was on a par with Wishart's magazine.

So if there isn't action (why would there be? Farrar loves his bigoted fascist commentators. They're the core of NACTs voting base, after all) and there isn't governmental enforcement, what other paths are you suggesting?
I doubt most of Kiwibleurghs readers get there by clicking through from Public Address.

Apparently the RWC will isolate us from global financial meltdown, as well. Truly wonderful that the great Mr Key has brought us such a beneficial visitation.
What will we do for the next twenty-five years before it’s our turn again?

Hard News: How much speech does it take?, in reply to
The Internet isn't in New Zealand (or anywhere else). Are you suggesting that that law should be enforced by firewalling off overseas sites that contain such material? (Given that a huge chunk of such content is in a country which has a constitutional aversion to any such censorship).

In that case, what is it suggesting? If the author is simply setting out a moral code that he personally subscribes to, it isn't going to change the attitude of others who don't adhere to his code.
