  • Legal Beagle: Referendum Fact Check #1, in reply to Graeme Edgeler,

Labour leads on the party vote in most (all?) the Maori Party held seats. Possibly the voters only vote for the MaoriNats because they can hedge their bets and party vote Labour? If they had only an electorate vote, it might go back to the Labour candidate.

Getting geeks and artists in the same room

It would be nice if the geeks and the traditional IT industry would get in the same room. Or even have a discussion in adjoining railway carriages or something?

  • Legal Beagle: Referendum Fact Check #1,

if you really think Party X. is (ab)using their list as an insurance scheme for useless incumbents the solution isn't to change the electoral system. In the short term, don't support them with your party vote. In the mid- and long-term, get off your fraking arse and get involved in the party's candidate selection and list ranking process.

    Too true.

But the whole thing about MMP allowing 'defeated MPs to sneak back on the list' is a canard. If you're an MP for a marginal seat (like AKL or WLG central) and the overall election goes against your party, then even if you've been parliament's most diligent and intelligent member, you might still lose. If you're the Labour MP for Mangere or the National one for Ilam, then you have absolutely no chance of losing, even if you're a corrupt right wing criminal (as per the prior incumbent of one of those seats).

Also (how did we get here) it is fairly straightforward, technically, to construct an inverter that takes random power (batteries, solar panels, generators, iffy mains) and outputs a mains voltage synchronized to a time reference (quartz or even GPS). I doubt Jaycar would have such a thing ATM, but this change might create a market.

actually. they slow down and speed up in reaction to grid load, but maintain an average for the benefit of synchronous electric clocks. With such things becoming antique, that gets less neccesary

even if Labour does take back some Maori seats, it’s of limited value.

I think the value is not having the Maori/National party in a position of influence, really.

I might be wrong, but think that for US domains, anyone can get some sort of delegated registration authority and register as many names as they want for a fixed fee. So they do crap stuff like detecting when someone googles a domain name and immediately registering it so they can sell it on.

It's a fact though, that the cost of registering domains tends to zero as volume increases. One rationale for charging a high fee is that it prevents names being squatted on.

Well, there haven't been many coalition agreements recently. Labour/Progressive? Apart from that confidence-and-supply has been the main way parties have worked together.

Phil Goff thinks he can win all seven Maori seats and that "[Hone's] his ideology was different from Labour's and he was not a stable partner".

So, if after that election Labour have 50 seats, Greens 8 and Mana 4, we'll be seeing a National-led minority government? One hopes the rest of Labour will finally have the sense to roll Goff, should that eventuate.

  • Legal Beagle: Mana update,

You can display "ribbons rosettes and streamers" on your person or on a "vehicle in party colours". So I guess it may hinge on whether the car was red, white or black (or would a Maori Party car need to be red, white *and* black)?

I'm wondering how s.197 of the Electoral Act gets interpreted to conform to the BORA. If one made a statement asserting ones personal support for a party, is that "influencing voters"?
