  • Hard News: Rough times in the trade,

I guess there are various "sexy" jobs, like being a journo, or film producer, or model, that people, especially school leavers, are hugely keen to do.

You can't, I think, take a degree in modelling. But you can study journalism or film studies. I wouldn't want to prevent people taking those classes - even if they never become journalists, any sufficiently rigorous form of learning is useful. But maybe all courses should carry a clear indication of the number of graduates who get jobs in the chosen sector.

Incidentally, I rue the day that the internet transformed IT from a sad backroom activity into one of those borderline-sexy jobs. As a twenty-something coder In the early 90's, I made two or three times average earnings, flew business class and was furnished with a suitably whizzy company car. I guess I still do ok, but those days are gone, sadly. Too much competition.

Great magazine, Pilot. Lots of stuff about flying around in MIG-21s and Spitfires, that kinda thing.

in Japan, motorway patrol cops–in cars–wear helmets

I believe certain NZ cities plan to introduce them for bus drivers.

  • Hard News: We are all Twitter,

the 18-year-old who alleged that Darren Hughes sexually assaulted him managed to get an injunction in NZ against the publication of his name using the privacy tort.

But "they" couldn't injunct Slater to stop revealing suppressed names?

Ok, most of the other parties choose and rank their list through an opaque, but nominally democratic process.

I had a read of some of the party rules. Sure, they include consultation of members, but at the end of the day, there's an awful lot of "smoke filled rooms" allowed for.

I suspect that a lot of people in CHC live their precisely because they can drive everywhere with minimal (by world standards) congestion. They'd take some convincing to switch to bikes.

But then, National have left Christhchurch more or less a dictatorship. A future lab/green government could implement a cycling city under CERA with minimal consultation. Suck that, Tories!

  • Legal Beagle: Voting Referendum: Jus' Sayin',

I’m in favour of a voting and selection system which gives more power to individuals and less power to parties

Parties are just collections of individuals with common political ideas. If you want to influence the list, you can join a party and do so. (At least you can if you support the Greens. Most of the other parties choose and rank their list through an opaque, undemocratic process. If you don't like this, don't vote for them. Hopefully when Mana get into their stride they'll have a democratic system of list selection, too).

(In the US, most states have primary elections and you don't have to be a financial member to vote, just registered as a supporter).

  • Hard News: Someone has to be accountable…, in reply to Russell Brown,

Nah, doesn't really matter. It'll be inside the firewall and NATed for the most part. Even if they want the Internet self-service gateway to be IPv6, that'll be possible with a reverse proxy (or in the presentation layer).

Also, changing shouldn't affect anything other than the internet server, which ought to be swappable. Famous last words, though.

  • Hard News: We are all Twitter,

Graeme, how much ability would the NZ authorities have to seek information on Twitter users in the US?

I know extradition demands a similar offence in both jurisdictions, so (even if electoral offences were extraditable) they wouldn’t be able to because the US had no restrictions on polling day propaganda (not to mention that any such restrictions would be unconstitutional).

Does that mean that the NZ government couldn’t get a court order against Twitter?

(EDIT: The UK case was libel, which of course exists in US law. But the electoral laws certainly don't take similar forms. "No propaganda on polling day" is pretty much peculiar to NZ)
