It does occur to me that the way SCF is now being dealt with through the criminal law is a total failure of regulation.

Letting Timaru accountants start billion dollar banks is like letting Tokoroa car mechanics build nuclear power stations. The Reserve Bank should be involved in any bank to the point where they have immediate visibility of related party lending and the like, and can instantly move to shut it down.

I reckon anyone using the words bad guys should get 18 months in jail and a 40k fine.

Look on the bright side. If the Hobbit isn't made here, then the NZ taxpayer saves $90mln (15% of the budget).

  • Voting Local 2010,

They should all run for the party they happen to belong to, IMHO and stop pretending to be independent when they're not.

Brown is a Labour mayor, Celia is a Green mayor, Parker is a National mayor.

Has it occurred to the parties that if they got behind local politicians who then do a good job, it could help them get elected nationally?

  • Hard News: Joining the conversation,

I thought I was judging it on its merits, which is her having turned a thoughtful magazine into a vehicle for "does my mortgage look big in this" type drivel.

Just as an example, one has the Listeners copious education coverage, which is about wanting to build a sifting system that will ensure the kids of Parnell and Ponsonby get picked out for the favoured treatment their class deserves. Which of course directly disadvantages ordinary women whose parents couldn't afford to send them to EGGS a whole lot more than a few jibes about people having the same political views as their spouse. Which, to judge by her writing and article selection, she does.

(you could link a Black article criticising National Party ideals if you want to prove me wrong)

  • Hard News: Joining the conversation,

If Black has a problem with people thinking that she has an identity of opinion with her husband, then there's a simple solution: stop producing a pamphlet of National party talking points. (with quality TV reviews)

the first song by a Kiwi band to reach No 1 in their home country for 20 years

Out of interest, how does that chart stuff work nowadays? I remember the system from the UK when I was a kid, when basically it was the record company that could shift the most stock through the chart return stores. And I remember using a web proxy to help get "Killing In The Name Of" to #1 in the UK last Christmas.

But how does it get done in NZ? Single sales? Downloads? Airtime?

our Census shows that there is twice as many Samoan woman living in Nz as Samoan males

    You're completely wrong.

I found the numbers on the stats website (table 3).

Male: 64,530, Female: 66,573. Exactly what one would expect.

Do you have any more ignorance you'd like to share with us?
