  • Hard News: Morning in Auckland,

Just to give you an idea of the relevance of online polls, the Dom Post had one on the Wellington mayoral election giving:
Brian Pepperell achieving 40.3% of the votes, Celia Wade Brown was second with 26.9% and Kerry Prendergast was on 4.0%

    Actual figures were roughly:
    Pepperell 9%, Yan 12%, Wade Brown & Prendergast 38%.

    A random number generator gives:
    Pepperell 32%, Yan 25%, Wade Brown 17%, Prendergast 25%

I think the random numbers beat the online poll.

  • Voting Local 2010,

It's nice that the people of Auckland voted in an centre-left mayor and council.

It'd be better if the newly elected representatives could have decided the level of staffing for the new council and influenced key purchasing decisions.

And if they could decide to run some services directly instead of therough unaccountable CCOs.

And if local boards could have had tax raising powers and the ability to run local services.

And if towns that happen to be somwhere near Auckland and have a rural, conservative population could be left with their own councils.

And if the council could have been elected by a fair, proportional voting system that would give wider representation and limit the mayor's power.

    Etc.

  • Hard News: Sunday in Super City,

Currently missing: any bicycle parking at all.

What for? Does anyone ride a bike to the rugby? I'm sure there are plenty of places to park an All Blacks branded Holden V8 ute..

  • Voting Local 2010,

Why doesn't he just fuck off?

Because some other city would have him inflicted on it. At least Whanganui is a long way from anywhere and doesn't have scheduled air service.

  • Voting Local 2010,

There are 1000 special votes to count (people who didn't get voting papers and had to go to the council centres to vote). I guess it's possible that a majority of those might not be enthusiastic partisans for the status quo.

If Celia hadn't backed the Manners Mall redevelopment on dubious grounds, she might have got a few more voters to turn out (it wasn't just the nutters who opposed it).

Also, I suspect the vote on CERRA drove a lot of Green supporters who'd otherwise have worked for Celia's election to sit on their hands.
(Even if they voted for her against Kerry).

  • Voting Local 2010,

So do you think they'll sack Brown and appoint commissioners straight off, or wait till after the Nats get re-elected?

  • Voting Local 2010,

    what ' s
wrong with being a real estate agent ?

Nothing that a suitably brutal execution wouldn't cure.
