If somebody was to start a South Island party and run an electorate campaign down there, they'd also get an overhang.
The Maori seats are a taonga and not for the rest of us to decide on.
I do think we should remove vote-splitting (so that an electorate vote implies a vote for the candidates party), remove coat-tailing, cut the threshold to 3% and introduce an optional open list.

Did you not know that Jesus was a property developer? All that "carpenter" businesses was about throwing up timber framed villas in the outer reaches of Galilee using his trusty team of subbies / disciples.
He only came unstuck due to the Romans robust approach to code compliance. Apparently his last words were "ok mate. so I used untreated timber for outside walls. You aren't gonna nail me to a tree for it?"

In using the words "social factors" I was trying to be polite and not use the words "inbred", "retard" or "engineering student". Because that would be mean to inbreds, retards and engineering students.
But the disparity does illustrate that substance abuse is a problem with people, not a problem with substances.
(the other alternative is that if you present at Auckland A&E having taken too many pills, you get told to go home, lie down and not do it again, while at CHC they actually take notes and fill reports)

I had thought that bribing people to cast a vote (as opposed to voting for a candidate) could not be "corrupt".
If we had ballot box voting for council, most of these abuses would be much harder.

curiously, way more in Christchurch
than AucklandThat isn't all that curious. The kids of Auckland (and Wellington) were obviously better able to regulate their drug use, take a safe dose, and not trouble A&E than those in Christchurch. That's social factors, and maybe looking at how they work is an important part of harm reduction.

How much are we paying these people to discover that Es are maybe not always pure MDMA? Do they have further earthshattering discoveries to import. Maybe they'll find out in few years that finance companies lend cheap money to their dodgy mates?

If we take Wellington as an example, then assume the final round has all candidates eliminated except Kerry Prendergast and Celia Wade-Brown.
If I rank Celia 1 (or any other value) and Kerry last, then my vote in this round goes to Celia. If I don't rank Kerry, the same thing happens.
So basically, the last rank doesn't matter. On the other hand, if i didn't rank either of them I wouldn't have expressed an opinion and my vote would be eliminated as non-transferrable.

Passport fraud is unusual.
Crime by a lawyer is unusual.
Discharge without conviction for a crime which potentially attracts a long jail term is unusual.
The NZ media reports the most amazing trivia when it suits their narrative.
Based on that, it's odd that the Garrett case raised not even a ripple.

My reading is that the quota is half of the valid votes *in each round*. That's what Wikipedia suggests for Meek's method.
Also, I think that if you have just one credible candidate you dislike, then they will end up in last-round contention against one you *have* ranked, and so your final preference will be irrelevant. If you dislike multiple candidates, it may be worth grading your dislike. Or not.
I also haven't analysed the impact of where you rank no-hoper candidates.
