It occurs to me that they could use this to sidestep a loss of confidence and supply.

Having the power to change any law by Order in Council means they can just amend supply to continue forever (well, until April 2012, which is after their term expires), and the government can already just refuse to call a parliament. If the courts object, Brownlee can sack the judges and appoint himself Chief Justice.

    Tell me I'm wrong!

Surely proper democratic accountability and the rule of law is *more* important in times of difficulty. Holding politicians to account means they might think about their decisions, and the law provides another way to review them.

  • Legal Beagle: Bill Will II,

Term deposits, government bonds, maybe tracker funds are ways to maintain ones wealth without conflicts of interest. Many ordinary jobs forbid one from having side-businesses, you know.

Surely when someone is employed by the people in a prestigious and lucrative position we're entitled to full attention.

Off topic, what about the former Head Defence Scientist? My guess is that his CV simply listed his military service and sporting interests, and he put the gloss on about being James Bond verbally, in interview.

  • Legal Beagle: Bill Will II,

How much does a Supreme Court judge get paid? Something over $300k? One might think that that was enough for them not to need other "business interests" that might get them into difficulties?

  • Southerly: Refugee Status,

The glass they use for those modern glass buildings is bloody strong. The Lloyd's of London building has survived two large bombs pretty much unscathed.

I find it odd that the national headquarters of Civil Defence is in a bunker, located between the harbour and a fault line.

  • Southerly: Refugee Status,

I'm thinking about visiting Mitre10 and buying a shedload of door frames. Then I could make a tunnel of doorframes over my bed, and thus be protected against all seismic disasters. Reckon I could survive an 8 or 9 under that lot?

  • Up Front: Day Five,

I've realised that for my own mental health, I'm best to avoid the TV news and disaster porn.

I was actually thinking that all this media, including social, isn't very good for people as it acts as a feedback loop. Maybe earthquake advice should involve switching off radios, televisons and internet.
