On the basis of doing the opposite of the religious right, I'd be voting for Prast.
Also, the Wellington election seems to be proceeding in an atmosphere of total media blackout. I know very little about the candidates.
Bryan Pepperell is campaigning on "living within our means" which seems eminently sensible, but I don't know if he's a wowser or not.
Iona Pannett helped wreck Manners Mall, so I don't feel inclined to enthusiastically support her.
Jack Yan had said little about anything apart from wanting to spend our money on free WiFi so he isn't embarrassed when his geek mates visit -
According to Wikipedia's handy table, 5.1 is an atomic bomb that didn't really work right. (500 tonnes TNT)
Of course, the wielders of nukes don't typically bury them kilometers underground.

Also, what did the War Damages Board do, given there were no attacks on NZ territory during WW2? Shipping insurance?
-
I wouldn't see any reason for local councils to do more than take in the money and pass it to EQC, just as insurance firms do now.
So everyone's insurance would get slightly cheaper, rates would be slightly more and every property would be covered.
-
Why isn't the EQC funded out of a rate surcharge instead of an insurance levy? That would ensure everyone was covered.

Give JK some slack, it was the weekend and Hawaii to Christchurch is a bit of trek even by private jet.

I thought that photo was a stock one found by Googling "earthquake child victim" on Getty. Nice to know they have some journalistic standards.
Up here in the Hutt, I was breathlessly informed of widespread flooding on my way to work. Actually, it's full, but nowhere near the stopbanks, which are huge. A car park and a road that runs inside the banks got flooded, that's all.

this is typically done in the MSM using units of "atomic bombs"
A seismologist friend of mine has spent some time poking around the fringes of the Nevada Test Site looking at the effects of underground nuclear explosions. If I understand his explanations correctly, they use them to see what a known energy release does and compare this with natural earthquakes.

Easy fix for unwanted pregnancies would be to put a dose of oestrogen/progesterone in every RTD sold. Rather like folic acid in bread?

On the subject of drinking restrictions, one would expect, if the advocates of lowering the drinking age were right, that crime by 18-20 year olds would have increased between 1999 and 2001. According to stats, it didn't, figures were fairly flat (they went up substantially later in the decade, possibly due to increased reporting)
I'm also interested in what happened when opening hours were relaxed and alcohol outlets expanded. Does anyone know offhand the years for that?
