Hilary, you need to understand the received geek ethos:
Being a socially conscious consumer is vitally important. But shininess trumps anything: see also flatscreen TVs made from toxic substances in sweatshops, big budget sci-fi made by ACTAs core backers, games consoles from whale eating monopolists, &c -
Interesting how minimalist the coverage of this in the NZ media. But I guess someone falling
off their bike in Eketahuna is clearly of greater import. -
Personally, I'm impatient for a decent virtual DJ app to turn up for iPad. The ones released so far all have too many shortcomings for me.
Until iPad class devices get substantially more CPU (not to mention decent USB host support to talk to the audio interface) I wouldn't hold your breath. Rendering music takes a lot of CPU off a laptop, especially assuming true pitch shifting and a few effects.
Plus, are users going to be willing to fork out hundreds of dollars for *anything* on an iPad, or has the die been cast for applications to be in the single digit pricerange? I can't see how Ableton or Serato could manage to supply and support a product for $9.99.

I reckon cricket played on a large squash court like structure would be quiet entertaining.

A law has been passed at the insistence of Big Sport that bans the marketing of other products anywhere near the stadium.
People called Stella or Tui, for instance, will be banned from going anywhere between Stout St and the ferry dock unless they change their names. Bizarre but true.

Rugby support is in decline though. The Phoenix typical gate count is within hailing distance of the rugby now.

how many extra visitors
Less all the visitors who choose to skip NZ because it's expected to be full of rugbyheads

In unrelated business news - Talleys bids to takeover Affco
If that's unrelated, I'm a banana.
I for one have no desire do eat meat that's been butchered by ill, infectious, workers, The Jungle style.
I wonder if the UK supermarkets will be as keen to buy it when they and their customers find out.

though [riders whizzing in their Lycra] is very
rarely televisedPossibly due to the fact that depiction of urophilia is specifically illegal in New Zealand.

@Martin
Oh dear. So they (as in Garth George) turned a reasonable argued piece into one of the typically incomprehensible non-sequiturs that their letters page specialises in.
(I tend to characterise letters writers into "bigoted", "bigoted & ignorant", "illiterate", "bigoted, ignorant and illiterate" etc. But maybe it's just the editing.
(Which is one reason I reckon the end of print journalism in NZ would be no great loss).
