  • Random Play: Fiji #3: No truth, only versions,

Zimbabwe was a bit like that in 02. You could do the tourist / traveller thing and it *appeared* no more fucked up than other African states. The government didn't hassle us - we were a source of dollars for their mates, after all.

Then it went rather more pear shaped.

  • Cracker: P is for Politics.,

Yeah, but if P worked as advertised in the Herald, Prast would have chopped several peoples arms off, be robbing dairies to pay for his habit and living in a gutter in Otahuhu.

Instead he's had a very succesful career in the arts and to my knowledge has committed no acts of senseless violence. His worst crime seems to be Mercy Peak.

I'm not arguing that meth makes people nice to have around, and quite undertstand that (like booze) it makes for a far less pleasant vibe in a club than E.

But that doesn't mean that it's instant underclassness in a point bag, or that all the problems of violence in NZ could be solved if we could stop people getting hold of Codrals.

  • Hard News: The McCully Touch,

The ironic thing is that, if it wasn't for the millions of dollars our government is shovelling the way of Big Sport, the wingnuts might have a point that the moronic rantings of Haden are a private matter between him, his talkback radio employer and the NZFU.

  • Hard News: The Commission, and creative risk,

the straight-to-DVD sequel to Whalerider, where Paikea and her pet Minke wreak bloody revenge on a Japanese scientific research ship in the Southern Ocean

I'd watch that. On DVD, mind.

  • Random Play: Fiji or not Fiji, that is…,

I guess I can't complain, having been, inter alia, to Zimbabwe, Singapore, Nepal under Gyanendra and the US under Bush.

But this does sound like a Potemkin village outing. Really, NZ should be taking the lead in escalating sanctions that will hit the fat cats of Fiji (who presumablybenefit from tourism and enjoy the favour of the dictatorship).

  • Hard News: The Commission, and creative risk,

But you can always argue that. People are dying! Maybe we should close all libraries and galleries, concrete our parks over and spend the money on healthcare.

Then again, most of our ills are self-inflicted and kids in the developing world are starving. Maybe we should close the hospitals and pend it all on foreign aid?

  • Hard News: Gushing for Auckland,

Ok, seems that this is wrong, and the real deadline is August 20th. But Stuff got it as wrong as me, and registering now won't do any harm.

  • Hard News: Gushing for Auckland,

On the basis that people reading this might be keen to vote in the actual election, something you should know:

The last day to register in order to get a vote in local elections is tomorrow. To enrol, go to Elections NZ and fill out the form. Do it now!

(If you think this is a bit of a rort and disenfranchises younger, mobile, voters, you'd be right).

  • Hard News: Gushing for Auckland,

City Vision is a formal coalition between Labour, Greens and alliance (who?) to contest local body elections (In Auckland, at least).

The CitRats do not make this formal disclosure, but if someone has stood for or held office on the ticket of a national party, it's reasonable to assume that they remain a supporter of that party (in the absence of some sort of public change of views).

In Wellington, we have STV, and hence the Greens are able to run as a party and get candidates elected. I believe the other parties in the city all hide behind pseudo-independents - Kerry, for instance, is a former National candidate.

We should have MMP council elections, mayors or leaders elected by council, and overt political parties. That would be way more democratic.

  • Hard News: Grade-A lunacy. With your money.,

I worked for a firm in the late 90s that was all about deep linking and we never got so much as a cease and desist.

I wonder how many of these sites set NOBOTS. Anyway as a layman I'd argue that a link, deep or otherwise, is fair use.
