  • Hard News: Media freedom in the Pacific,

What's more incredible is that Baianimaramara is playing the game as though the rest of the world will capitulate on sanctions and other measures taken against Fiji.

Well, the Key government has been softpedalling, letting Fiji play in the seven's, etc, so you can see why he might think that.

I think [the fijian people] like his programme and what he's doing.

So why doesn't he call an election and run in it?

What's actually needed is escalating sanctions. We need a law making it a serious offence to be a member of the Fijian army, police, and civil service, so that if Bananainarama or his cronies set foot in NZ in the future, they're looking at going straight to Parareroremo without the option to get back on the plane.

    That would focus their minds.

Also, while we have the attention of the NZ radio gurus, what's with the Sunday Lunchtime Jazz Closed Shop?

Do the programmers get together and agree that on Sunday lunchtimes, if you want to listen to the radio, it will be jazz?

    Active is dull

It's *variable*. I suspect (somebody can put me right) that it's almost entirely a volunteer operation, so it's up to who volunteers.

Like I mentioned upthread, *I* think that Liam is pretty good in the mornings. Some of the others play stuff in daytime that isn't really daytime radio. Then there's the guy on Saturday mornings. Nuff said...

I notice the dance music / rock music divide popping up. They both have an audience, and in Auckland in the middle of the last decade, dance had a large one. I guess if you don't like dance music, then it's crap, and nobody will tell you otherwise. Same for rock. Plus if you're 19, then this is spiritually important. If you're one of the cool kids who goes to (insert current Jafa cool kid rock band name) gigs, then attending Our House is gonna get you ostracised.

If RadioWorks didn't had the sense to put contractual steps in place to stop that happening, then they've got bigger problems than Thane

The advice I've had in the past is that restraint of trade clauses are hard to enforce, especially for longer than a few months. They also have to protect the employer from something other than the employee just taking their skills somewhere else.

I recall when Matt & Chris did the show a few years ago, they had Sue Kedgely on wanting to suppress violent cartoons. They gave her a total roasting (I think she was expecting an easy ride on student radio).

I'm not sure wheich one of them said: I watched violent cartoons as a child. It didn't make me violent - it just made me want to draw cartoons

Hopefully the new show'll be like that.

(Not that I listen to it. Down here in Wellington Liam Luff and Lucy Lolz are doing a great job on Active Breakfast).

  • Hard News: McVicar and the media,

In other words, it didn't work. I mean, really, if you want to explain how the anarchists will avoid getting robbed by nasty men with guns, Barcelona is not a good example.

*Within* the anarchist community, it worked well. Until you have a stable such community, there are always going to be groups attacking it, and they have to be physically eliminated. Durutti did his best, but the anarchists had ancient rifles against the German and Soviet weaponry of the communists and fascists.

  • Hard News: McVicar and the media,

how would we stop the sort of blood-feud based chaos that tends to emerge whereever an effective legal system is absent?

Anarchism is not the same thing as anarchy.

Yes, most pre-industrial societies turned into autocracies large or small, where the man or group who could marshal the most violence took control, oppressed the others, and attacked other communities.

But people have developed ways of living that avoid this. Currently, we have capitalism, where people are given the illusion of control and the system's violence is primarily targetted at the "other", be that Iraqi kids or Maori "criminals".

Another is anarchism, where an attempt is made to actually remove the concept of leadership through violence. This has actually been tried and worked in Barcelona during the Spanish Revolution. It was crushed by the forces of state and traditional capitalism (in particular the Soviet Union and the fascist states of Europe).

  • Hard News: A revolting piece of shit,

    buttoned-down, efficient, humorless work culture

I think that's a cliche. I've worked in German offices, and they're no more buttoned-down than NZ or anywhere else.
