If I got a gun license, I could buy guns without anyone knowing what I've bought, right?
I could then sell them to random crims, swap them for weed, bury them in stashes around the place, etc, and unless I got caught in the act nobody would be the wiser? That doesn't sound sensible to me.
If we had a gun registry, it wouldn't fix much overnight, but people with guns (and their families after they die) would eventually decide not to risk jail (and it should be jail) for having an illegal firearm. So the number of guns would steadily decline, to the point where if you wanted an illicit weapon, you'd have to spend quite a lot of money with some serious criminal types.
Also, a big orange tag on each registered gun would make it obvious someone was out hunting or whatever with an illegal one.

If the government did the sensible thing and ran a fairly high deficit during a recession (by maintaining public spending, mostly) they would keep unemployment down and wages up, helping most people get through these years.
That would however, drive up interest rates for the years following the recession, impacting business profits.
So keeping borrowing down and deliberately shrinking the economy is a political decision to help NACTs constituency at the expense of ordinary people.

[community policing] is a major policy and has been all along
But who do these 'community police' talk to, apart from school staff and others that they are officially engaged with, or who have reported a crime?
The police tend to self-isolate from communities. How many of you have a cop in your circle of friends, or expect to meet one at a party?
A lot of this is (like I said before) down to laws like drug prohibition not being accepted by large numbers of people.

Why did they not have the intelligence?
A good point.
A lot of people around Napier knew that Molenaar had guns and was borderline mentally ill (clearly no longer borderline, by last week).
I think part of the problem, and it's common to a lot of nations, is that a largish portion of the community are no longer particularly inclined to assist the police, and the police have a fairly limited interaction with the community.
A fair part of this comes down to the way a lot of the work the police do is classed (at least by someone) as social control. I think most people accept that dishonesty and violence are crimes and support their suppression.
But there are many crimes that don't have that consensus:
- 30% or more of people in NZ use drugs at least sometimes, and don't accept their criminalisation
- a large portion of NZ motorists are regularly non-compliant and have negative contact with police as a result
- Maori and Pacific people suffer, shall we say, disproportionate attention from the police
- and then you've got young people, street drinkers, punks, political agitators, etc..Maybe we need to pull back as a society from ever increasing legal restriction and look at how we can use non-coercive ways to make society better, rather than using police to try and force people into a mythical perfect society.

Chinese, Korean and Pakistani
But not Turkish, Lebanese or Israeli. It isn't even a correct generalisation.

A congestion charge for the central city and associated motorways would have negative cost and reduce/remove the need for additional highways.
$10 a day from 150,000 vehicles (based on 200,000 daily vehicles through the CMJ, plus another 100k not using the motorway, minus 50% for traffic reduction ) would raise at least $350mln a year.

They were going to shoot shit out of the house using the 25mm cannon on the LAV, but at $100 a round English has vetoed it.

The cockies are being included as collateral to support the Banks-O-Mander.
Should all else fail and a credible left-wing candidate gain some momentum, their votes will be there to get the ACT candidate elected. Whether they want their paddock to be part of the Greater City is of no consequence - they've been allocated their role and that's that.

When is someone going to shoot the criminal so Napier and New Zealand can get back to life?
I reckon an atom bomb a few hundred metres from his house would take him out nicely. Cause a bit of collateral damage but they're all dope-smoking gang trash in those bush towns anyway..

The freight line to Kinleith could be used for passenger traffic, I guess.
