Out of interest, what's the objection of Waiheke Islanders to joining T/C?
I can see advantages if I was an islander, as I almost became at one stage:
- no Banks
- no being part of the supercity
- more influence on a smaller local body
- being part of a similar semi-rural areaI guess the disadvantages are:
- lack of communication with the rest of the council area (one passenger boat a week, or a 4 hour drive)
- less subsidy dollars
- lack of coordination with AucklandIndependence would make sense, apart from the huge rates bill.

misspell them as spectacularly as Cook did: Toai Poonamoo and Ea Heinom Auwe.
Possibly a reasonable transliteration of the way the people he met pronounced them?

I've read the Local Government Act several times, but still don't quite get all the steps:
- 10% of voters signed a petition, so it goes to the LGC
- Must the LGC hold a referendum, or can they reject it on grounds (like Waiheke is the planned site for the new Mayoral Palace, and thus needs to remain in Megacity One)?
- If Waihekians vote to join Thames Coromandel, is this binding?
- Presumably the T/C people also get a say on whether they want Waiheke?
- Could Waiheke petition/vote to become an independent council, in Waikato or as a unitary body?
- How about Waitakere? Or Grey Lynn? Could they defect from Megacity One soon after its formation, or will it be "protected" from voter-based change?

On the Hanover subject, as I pointed out at the time, the shareholders would almost certainly have been better off with liquidation.
Mr Grey Accountant might not have the glitz of Eric Watson, buit at least he wouldn't spend your mum's money on parties in Istanbul. (Suspiciously close to the fraudsters favourite statelet of Northern Cyprus, but that's just my suspicious mind...)

If a referendum is appropriate on whether Waikekamukau gets moved from Sunshine District to Environment Taranaki, or in the real NZ to confirm STV voting in Wellington, how is it not appropriate for a total restructuring?
We don't need to abandon our democracy just so we can host a few rugby games, or, if we do, we should send the rugby off to Fiji or Zimbabwe.
Given that our ACT masters consider it appropriate to rebuild councils on governmental whim, I look forward to the next Labour government reversing this with a measure passed in urgency the day after they get elected.

Among other things, Auckland Grammar has "an investment fund aimed at generating an annual income to be used to attract, reward and retain quality teaching staff", a bequest system, a foundation to hold the donations in perpuity, and they've recently built an Old Boys Pavilion and a new sports facility.
And you'd think from all that that they're a private institution.
They aren't, they're wholly owned by the people of NZ, and I for one think sonme of that money should be spread where it's needed.

..I couldn’t think of a worse jury to be on.
I'd couldn't think of anything better. All social conservatives should experience the inside of a slammer for a few years.
What was he supposed to have done again?

Did people see the Sensible Sentencing Trust page in Arabic? Roughly translated it says:
In the name of Allah, the Beneficient and Merciful.
Bro. Chur.
The SST is the secret NZ branch of the Muslim Al Quaida Brotherhood. In order to avoid the wrath of Helen Clark and her lesbian satanist clique, we have disguised ourselves as good old Kiwis with backgrounds in the police and politics.
Soon we will be able reveal ourselves. Following the success of the "three strikes" laws, we plan to implement full sharia law in NZ, including the right to beat ones wife as part of good husbandly correction. If thwarted in this, we will hijack four trolley buses and crash them into the beehive.
Keep this to yourselves for now, lads.

The thing is, the system of mayoral elections being foisted on the City of Rainbows is *designed* to elect a posturing idiot.
First there'll be pre-election media jostling for momentum, which will result in two candidates becoming the only possible choices. This will laregly depend on money and TV time. All the candidates will claim to be "non-political" despite pasts as ACT candidates, National advisors, etc.
In the actual poll, voting for anyone lagging in the polls will be equivalent to an abstention. So the choice will be between two more or less right-wing candidates, with the option if you don't like either being to stay at home, or waste ones vote on an also-ran.
