  • The New World Order: A Visual Guide,

It's interesting, though, that the right is much better at civil disobedience than the left:
    - National's tractor protest against farmers paying their way on climate change - succeeded]]

    - The UK blockades of oil refineries - caused substantial disruption and resulted in a freeze in fuel duty costing GBP6bln.

    - The UK pro-foxhunting marches - although foxhunting was banned, it continues with no effective enforcement action.

Also, I wonder how many wingnuts are on the US no-fly list? My guess would be zero, despite their proven tendency to terrorism.

  • Discussion: Regarding Auckland,

Aren't all Maori MPs in Maori electorate seats?

Eh? You mean all the MPs who are Maori are in Maori seats? There are plenty that aren't: Georgina Te Heu Heu? Meteria Turei? Parekura Horomia?

But I do think that James has a point on "community of interest seats". I think there should be an option for any defined group (of which Maori are an established one) to choose to be represented other than by locality. So if Chinese people want an electorate and enough of them petition for one, they'd get it. Affiliating to a group would be optional, of course, and I suspect Maori would be the only one to manage it.

  • Discussion: Regarding Auckland,

I don't think being a list MP logically means you support PR? Just because you were elected through a system doesn't mean you agree with it. (Although Irish republicans struggled with this for many years..)

  • Discussion: Regarding Auckland,

Interesting to describe Christine Fletcher as left-ish, given she is a former National MP.

  • Discussion: Regarding Auckland,

As this is about saving money and (cough) improving services to Auckland we have decided to move the new council's head offices to Wellington.

There is precedent for this. Surrey County Council (the local body for an area SW of London) has its offices in the London suburb of Kingston, which hasn't been in Surrey for over 40 years. Moving has always been considered to difficult and expensive.

Some sites, I wish they'd set political sidewalls and delete everything from left or right of that. I think The Standard is headed that way. Mind, I guess I'd only be able to comment on Indymedia.

Also, I miss the "kill" function of rn & xnews (show me no more from a given person). I have considered building a cross-site comment manager that would recreate killfiles, amongst other stuff.

  • Hard News: The Cullen investment,

If it isn't going to be privatised, why structure it as a council owned enterprise in the first place?

As it is the people of Manukau have a center that they can relate to

    A (westfield) shopping centre?

I don't like the way the "supercity" is going to be run, but it's ridiculous to suggest that the outer parts of Auckland's urban sprawl are cities in any real sense. Has anyone ever, honestly, considered a night out in downtown Manukau? Or downtown Waitakere? Or even downtown North Shore City?
