    BDO at the Ellerslie Racecourse?

    Or Cornwall Park?

Or even better the Domain, which would have the adavantage that the party could spill easily into the city, or indeed run on a more adult 4pm-4am timeframe rather than in the heat and brightness of the day.

It doesn't really *need* a stadium, does it?

  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

To skip back to fibre, I notice that LTE offers 100Mbit cellular wireless.

This is being rolled out in Canada next year. If it ever makes it to NZ at a sensible price, it'll offer most of the functionality of current fibre, with a portable device.

I wonder if this will impact fibre takeup? Also, I do worry that the government will protect its investment in the "national fibre network" by blocking other technologies from being deployed.

  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

I don't see anything wrong with the academic study of journalism, provided it isn't presented as leading to a career as anything other than an academic.

Come to that, all courses that purport to lead to "media" type jobs should have a health warning:
Half the bright young things in NZ want to work in media/arts/culture, just like you. There are bugger all jobs, and this course probably won't help you to get one. You might want to get a job addressing envelopes and making tea at a newspaper - that probably won't get you your desired job either, but it'll at least pay you some dollars.

  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

Re ATM, I see how that could work technically, but presumably "my" fibre has to terminate in something (even if I buy my own customer side equipment) and I'll need to find a supplier for that. That supplier will be unregulated and free to lock all their customers into a bundle.

The actual LFC isn't allowed to provide anything other than raw glass, right?

  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

It will be interesting to see who are the private parties in these deals.

And who the ISPs will be?

My reading is that to deliver services on the new infrastructure will require, apart from leasing the actual dark fibre:
    - customer site equipment
    - cabinet space at the POP
    - Akamai type caching gear at the POP or above
    - NZ backhaul bandwidth
    - international bandwidth
    - international voice connectivity
    - rights to broadcast telly
    - rights to video-on-demand (unless VOD is delivered through an super-youtube model)

That isn't going to be dollar-and-a-dream stuff - I suspect there won't be many choices of full service ISPs (as opposed to thin-layer resellers).

  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

farmers might be keen to have an always-on internet connection that doesn't tie up their phone line

How does giving town dwellers fibre help in getting broadband (of some sort) to Eketahuna?

In terms of *business* fibre access, this is already available in CBDs and for big customers like hospitals and film studios that can justify a dedicated link.

Also, I can see how IP multicast allows fibre to replicate the functionality of satellite and digital terrestrial, but what benefit does this give us? I don't see how it enables me to decide that right now, at 1333, I want to watch Goodbye Pork Pie in Wellington when nobody else does. Doing that efficiently requires big caches of content fairly close to the end users, and that isn't cheap.

  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

Wireless has a lot going for it in terms of being no longer tied to a location and not having to configure local wireless / wired connectivity for all your stuff.

Also, with Twitter being the way of the future, the need for lots of bandwidth drops away. I see that the Guardian is switching to all-Twitter publication and our cash-strapped, content-lite papers cannot be far behind.

I guess I should rephrase that:
    @Evan - wrless p4wns yr fiba!

  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

To me the "killer app" of dedicated internet to the home will be what it has always been - the delivery of voice services. 2Mb or above will allow users to move from the ultra-reliable traditional circuit switched PSTN to packet switched voice service with little or no loss of voice quality (well, OK, some) and reliability.

Eh? Voice uses a few K of bandwidth, but it does need to be prioritised over other traffic (so that opening a web page doesn't make your call break up). The telcos are already moving to a system that will send voice up a DSL line in IP format.

The reason Skype is crap isn't lack of bandwidth in the local loop, it's because Skpe traffic has no quality of service (QOS) guarantee across the network.
