  • Hard News: About Arie, in reply to Matthew Poole,

Civilian NZDF or service employees are only subject to the Armed Forces Discipline Act when the unit they are working for is on "active service". A civvie sent to Afghanistan, such as a member of Willie Apiata's PR team, probably would be. A librarian in Trentham wouldn't.

You are out by a factor of 1000. 2,200kg is 2.2 tonnes, not 2.2kilotons.

  • OnPoint: On Price Gouging,

No economist I know has any interest in defending the rich.

Gavyn Davies? Although ironically he's on the left of his profession. It's the kids in their first year at Treasury on $50k a year that are the wildest neo-libs.

  • OnPoint: On Price Gouging,

There are a bunch of businesses that have a model which enshrines "price gouging" though - TradeMe sellers, airlines, even the NZRFU all run systems that are designed to increase the price as demand increases (or to give a good deal when there's low demand, but isn't that just another side of the same coin).

    What about them?

  • Muse: Reel Life: Pliéing Turkey,

I thought it was a fine film apart from the use of CGI. That should be reserved for silly sci-fi where it belongs.

Companies will be loathe to tender on state contracts if they know that their pricing models and terms will be available to the competition, even if the competition didn’t bid on a given contract, through the simple expedient of an OIA or equivalent request

They wouldn't tender? Just walk away and leave the money on the table? I doubt it.

I think they'd whinge a lot and still bid. Whether the government would get a better price if all pricing was transparent is an interesting question.

if a great state was behaving entirely virtuously, and in accordance with its public positions

    Has this ever happened?

  • OnPoint: Election 2011: GO!,

Having a commerce degree is useless full stop, unless one fancies being some sort of business consultant :-)

The BCom is mainly designed to relieve doting Chinese parents of their yuan, right?

Sales and management can't be taught, and if you need the practicalities of running a business, do Accountancy and/or Law.
