I don’t know how fiji’s communications work, but I presume some goes via satelite

Nowadays (fixed telecoms) satellites are only used where there isn't a cable alternative. Fiji is on Southern Cross so it's likely that most of their traffic would go that way.

Communication with other Pacific nations may use a satellite link.

Oh, and they were playing Buffalo on the AirNZ flight from Chch today. #royalties

Talking of which, does anyone want to put a figure on how much Jordan Luck is making from each sector flown on AirNZ? A cent every time they play T.F.S. must be making him enough to leave him set up for life.

  • Speaker: It's called "planning" for a reason, in reply to Kumara Republic,

The rural electorates are only that safe for National because a lot of potential Labour voters are on the Maori roll. That's one reason why National is keen to suck up to Tariana's lot, despite the misgivings of their racist core voters - if the Maori seats went, a lot of National MPs would lose their electorates.

Exactly - a sensible approach would be to have had the underemployed workers (assuming there are such people) in rural branches handle work from urban centres as well. Which they could do as effectively as if they were in an office block in Wellington.

But no, sack one lot of people and hire others - no saving, just disrupted lives.

I know. I like beer and I love Hashigo Zake.

My point was the way DB and Lion have made "pure" their latest buzzword for sub-Heineken tasteless lager. I wondered if they were targetting the crackhead market.

That might work if this wasn't NZ, where most employers feel that if they can't see bums on seats 9-5, the workers are skiving off and not giving them value.

Unless they *make* employers allow telecomuteing or radically change the nature of business ownership, it isn't going to make a difference.

Does anyone have an explanation of how Waihopai could read Fijian cellphone traffic?

The only method I can think of involves acting as the ground segment for a US controlled satellite. Aside from that, NZ could read the signals from overt or covert land receivers (e.g in the embassy), an offshore warship or an Orion flyby. Nothing that would involve Waihopai, except as an office building.

I guess its possible that Waihopai might intercept Intelsat traffic, but this would have limited relevance. It could also intercept fixed satellite traffic, but these are largely obsolete. (most Fijian voice and Internet would go via Southern Cross).

Possibly in China buses can ram cars and run over pedestrians without consequence. Here people tend to whinge, so buses have to slow and take avoiding action (they even whinge about getting killed on railway tracks, which is Own Stupid Fault if anything is).

That slows buses down. Then there's the way a bus, even an express bus, is compelled to tour housing estates and shopping areas, stopping every bus length to load and unload. (The Wellington airport bus takes 30 minutes to do the ten minute run to the CBD, because it tours all intermediate points on the way)

Maybe we need "virtual trains" with dedicated space and widely spaced stops. It just seems easier to have real trains...
