+1. Agree with this sentiment too:
The better option, of course, is to organise and respond. A group of people who have a pretty clear objective – no matter how apparently minor – that involves provoking a bit of a ‘slip’ in the grand plans – in order to make things better – can make a difference out of proportion to the effort.
That’s not a vague hope, by the way. It’s how things happen. Not always predictably (even in terms of where you aim to make a change) but something is always going to happen as a result of the efforts people make.
And it’s also worth remembering that there are lots of people feeling the same way – powerless, helpless, angry and sad, but also wishing they could do something.
That word ‘lots’ matters. If people can connect with each other there’s all sorts of possibilities. There’s even some real enjoyment and fun to be had and that remarkable feeling of working together with others for something that makes sense.

Much later, in front of the raging loggia of the pool house, I asked Bram if he agreed that the creation of the internet and the web led to the audience migrating away from traditional media and if this, in turn, had decimated advertising revenue. “Of course you guys aren’t to blame,” I said, “but you’re part of that world. What if the old system was actually the best business model for creating the largest amount of quality journalism?”
Bram looked at me for a moment. “Some things always lose out when better things come along,” he said.

if there is no production of worthwhile goods then there is nothing gained so nothing earned
You're missing most industries since the 19th century that may produce value in services and non-physical creativity, not stuff you can pick up and fondle. The finance sector is a warped and parasitic expression of that, but it doesn't mean we can ignore all the others.
Wildfire is valued because of its potential to disrupt an entire industry - which is also why it's not good for any who rely on that sector's traditional funding and production models. Unfortunately that includes friends like Russell, which is why it makes sense he'd be unimpressed. Not because they aren't cloth-capped workers toiling in factories to produce lumps of steel.

It feels like a lot of people are completely over being ignored and know it is pointless.
People can be very smart like that. Show some resourceful, coherent leadership that has a realistic chance of making a difference and they'll back it. Otherwise, more pressing needs closer to home will win every time.

I'm well aware of the context, thanks. This govt and their parties deserve credit for some things, but not the one you suggested, that's all.
I'm certainly not offended by disagreement. Certainly am by some of the stuff that's being done (and not done) in our name, regardless of ideology. It doesn't make sense from most angles of integrity. Traditional conservative voters must be appalled at the wasteful pork-barrelling going on. And liberals by government telling others what to do so much.
