Labour's new leader seems to be making some of the right noises.
Flanked by Robertson and party president Moira Coatsworth, Shearer immediately put his hand out to other opposition parties, saying he wanted reach across to help New Zealanders.
''I came in with an attitude of working with people and I would like to work closely with the other opposition parties.''

Not so sure about branding that so closely overlaps another party they need as an ally.
The MP for Mt Albert said he wanted to create a ''clean, green, clever'' New Zealand.
I guess they will put some energy next into how they convey what's distinctive about their party, in any case.

The three-yearly circus of our general election, which educates us to magnify the difference between centre-right and centre-left parties as if it represented the full spectrum of politics and the range of what is possible, can actually blind us as to what politics is about.
True, but it also offers a time of focus for a broader conversation - for those who are well-prepared. That readiness has been lacking, including amongst those in disability movements and organisations.

I don't want to knock any of the practical successes of disability campaigners. But in the senior political class I'm looking for somebody who is not happy with the model of resourcing disabilities, of thinking about disabilities, and wants to reform it radically. Then and only then we can start to fill our mouths with the word "fairness". Until then, we'll keep getting humiliated, and we'll keep having to fight each other for who gets the most crumbs.

That's just because we tell ourselves that it can't be done. Once again, though, the model is right there in front of our eyes.
When the poor have a Treaty on which to pin their court case securing funding for the programme you envisage, let's talk about MaoriTV as a model. And the "only a matter of attitude" angle had already outworn its welcome, thanks.

This is not an issue that it should be hard to campaign about.
We may all agree it's crucial but your chances in a time of increasing unemployment and poverty of mounting a successful campaign for public civics funding are slightly greater than for gay marriage.

I'm sure Don Brash, Lindsay Perigo, and any number of Act followers would feel similarly ripped off by the MSM's shallow focus.
They get way more than their fair share of the conversation given that 49 out of 50 New Zealanders don't share their beliefs.
