Sadly somewhat true though. If citizens and their representatives felt strongly otherwise they could have organised and voted accordingly. They didn't.
I tend to agree about the tastefulness of mentioning it, however.

Naturally none of the panellists meant to offer counter perspectives mentioned those recent opinion polls showing that the vast bulk of New Zealanders still oppose asset sales.

Any government being able to do whatever they want without having to consult anyone else is a recipe for Very Bad Things.
And our system lacks most of the checks and balances that other nations have, like an upper house. Weak opposition and media means little effective constraint on the executive.

I am a bit dubious about the advantages of improved rail to Auckland Central residents. Most of them either live within a painless walk, bike ride, bus ride or car trip from the city, or actually live in the city itself. Or they live on Waiheke, which will never ever be connected by rail to the city. It's one of the only electorates that doesn't really have much to gain.
Ideologically, you realise that makes it first cab off the rank. Or first tram, as it were. Rich folk need choice as well as reward.

You are arguing the level at which the threshold should be set. It's not restricted to either zero or 5%, but the level will be considered anyway in the upcoming review and was by the Royal Commission when NZ adopted the system.

They have tended to get more than their overall general vote share, haven't they? Especially from overseas voters.
