I think what happened is that at the last minute a lot of Labour voters decided to give their party vote to NZ First just to spite the right .
Or voters saw NZ First as the best way to them of moderating the prospect of a govern-alone National party intent on selling public assets.

So which way do the specials tend to fall?
Ex-Labour president Mike Williams reminded that thousands of voters previously registered for the Chch central/east suburbs have been displaced outside Chch and many will be special votes. They'll skew left (though presumably be subject to the same trend in party votes to NZ First and Greens).
