In the past few months, some lines written by Sydney-based New Zealander Martin Edmond have circulated around Christchurch. His newest book, Dark Night, describes a nocturnal journey he took through central Sydney, in the footsteps of artist Colin McCahon, and through his own memories of the city he moved to nearly 30 years before. He sees the site of an old hospital. It had been demolished and a luxury apartment block had gone up in its place.
He writes, "I still feel a pang, and not just because I can't remember any more what the hospital looked like: it also has to do with the way the places we belong to do not belong to us."
It is that last part that has been sent around Christchurch, on emails and through social media: we are realising that the places we belong to do not belong to us. These places can disappear suddenly, with no preparation or warning, and render much of our world unrecognisable.

The `third biggest’ claim comes from the IRB I am pretty sure, so take with a very great deal of scepticism.
Others have pondered the same. No one seems to have any actual figures to offer, either way Doesn't seem that complicated to resolve, so maybe the real story is why it hasn't been..
